FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Outdoors Cold spell warms up ice fishermen's hearts Sunday, January 10, 2010 Datebook Sunday, January 10, 2010 Notebook: Cold greets 'primitive' season Sunday, January 10, 2010 On ice Sunday, January 10, 2010 Columbus businessman Jack Roesch phoned just three days into the new year to say he planned to be ice fishing up Put-in-Bay way this weekend. Ice fishing on Lake Erie is one of Roesch's obsessions, and mild winters can dash even a passion's yearnings.
It appears Roesch and those of his ilk will not spend the winter with their ardor for coldwater walleye unrequited.
"I talked to some of the local guys," Roesch said last Sunday. "They said they've got solid, clear ice everywhere. That's the strong, hard ice. Six to 8 inches."
And the ice has had a chance to thicken considerably since. Long, frigid nights and a weak winter sun form the ice-making machine. After the current cold snap, the foreseeable forecast calls for night temperatures in the 20s to the teens and daytime temperatures at or below freezing.
