Title: Snow and Ice making do not mix well
Post by: davidhoheisel on December 12, 2010, 10:54:43 AM
We are in an interetsing time of year and we must all be safe. Ice is forming and then melting due to the warm days. Now we are getting snow on top of this ice. We will be getting really cold day's and might feel that the ice is safe. This could be farthest from the Truth.
The snow does two things. First the snow is mixing in the ice and freezing. This creates White Ice and it is not strong. You have to be very carefull. 4 inches of clear ice is usually strong enough but 8 inches of white ice could be deadly!
Second, The snow on top acts as an insulation and the ice will not build as fast as we might think. So you hgave to test your ice.
Please remember that no ice is ever safe and you must use every safty item you have to keep yourself safe.
