Title: mid winter ice
Post by: pig puncher on January 26, 2011, 06:32:01 PM
it seems like everyone is struggling to catch fish, (myself included).they say first and last ice are the best fishing. here in ohio, that is often the same thing. i've seen seasons that only last a week. this year we got ice early, and hopefully will stay for a while yet. it's gotta get better. 2 years ago i went to hubbard lake michigan to try and get some of the 20 inch perch they have there. ( yes that's right!) went the 2nd week of febuary. they had ice right after thanksgiving, and lasts till march or april. worst time to go. met up with a local guy, and he said his dad only fished in march. fished 2 or 3 weeks a year, that was it. fished for a week, and caught 3 walleyes as long as my hand. my buddy lost a good one. the only fish we hooked. keep after 'em guys, it'll get better..... i hope.

I agree with you fully, the bite slows way down and the fish move into deeper basins, atleast this is what I have experienced in the past. It seems to me you have to drill more holes and jump hole to hole to have a productive day. It won't be long and they'll begin feeding aggressively to prepare for the spawn, till then I'm going to keep drilling and moving.

I've been struggling all week at Alum.  I finally had a hookup with a saugeye only to lose it a foot or two from the hole.  That was the only real bite I had all week long.

Keep after them, their bound to bite sometime.

Yep, it's Mid-Season and it's time to start drillin' alot of holes and doing alot of searchin'... no more comfy 4 hrs sets at one particular spot.

It's hunt 'em, find 'em & catch 'em otherwise it's most likely empty buckets!
