Title: Steelies / Trout?
Post by: crv423 on November 22, 2011, 01:57:26 PM
I want to try some new things this year, one thing I've been wanting to try is fishing threw the ice for Erie steelhead and trout. Has anyone ever fished for them trough the ice? Any advice on where to go and what to use would be appreciated.

according to the fella who bought my 10" jiffy auger, the do pretty well on the vermilion river for steelies thru the ice. It's the reason he bought it, he had a fish they couldnt get thru the hole last yr. He showed me some pics of some of the fish, so i believe him.
I have an invite to try it with them, so i can pass along the info. to you once i know for myself.

I went last year in hopes of catching smelt (which we did) and ended up catching steelhead also. We went back a few times and always got at least a few. It was near cleveland i forgot the name of the boat launch but you just fish inside of the harbor, in about 4 or 5 feet of water(you can see the bottom the water is really clear) I will ask my buddy the name of the place we went and let you know, its a blast.

That sounds like some fun. I would definitely consider trying for some steelhead. I want to do a little research on this.
