Title: going to pib feb 17 any soft water suggestions?
Post by: coreymon on January 31, 2012, 11:10:13 PM
i had this trip planed 4 months ago with people coming from far and wide to come ice fish under jumpy's guidance. doesn't look like a rats chance for ice. but the show must go on. anyone have a suggestion? at the very least we have a dock and boat ramp to fish off of. however, we were hoping to get out on the water. got a row boat you would like to charter? or a power boat? we have life jackets and i would only want to go in between the islands on a very calm day. i spend a lot of time on Lake Erie and have no interest in going for a swim this time of year. the miller is going to resume operation feb 1st so we could literally trailer a boat over. thanks

Remember, the ferry service is subject to change...so dont bank on being able to bring your boat across. Or if you get it across, there is the chance of it getting stuck on the island. A lot of the issues with the ferry is ice that builds on land around the dock from spray off the waves. I've seen that stuff build a foot thick! I'd give Jeff a call and see if he knows of anyone that might rent a row boat or something.
If the weather stays like this, I might (keeping my fingers crossed!) put my boat in for a couple days. I'm on the next island north of PIB...and always looking for someone to go fishing with since my wife and kids aren't into it. How many is in your group?

i hear you about the miller schedule. i would only bring a boat or car over if the weather is going to be ok. we use the miller a lot. called jeff, waiting for a ring back. we have 6 guys two girls, only the guys want to fish. these are all really good guys i have known for a long time. if only 1 of us can get out it would be great! we will buy gas + what ever else you want, if you use your boat.

Lets play this by ear, you never know what the weather will bring. My boat is only a 21' cuddy so it gets really cramped with 4 guys. I do have a 12' aluminum row boat we could drag out too, anchor the two boats 50'-100' apart, two guys could jig from that. All ideas at this point!
How long are you planning on being up?

What was your time schedule. My work is spotty in the winter. I have an 18 foot deep-v bass boat that's Erie worthy. I'll be fishing the Great Lakes Largemouth Series this year. I can't take all 8 of you, but maybe 2 or 3. Have to see as time gets closer. As of now I don't have work till first of March, but with warm weather and no frost in the ground, they may try to move the project up. We'll see....

This is what the site is all about. I hope things work out for you and you have a great trip.
I am sure Jeff can help out with info.
If anyone is real daring Jeff takes his kayaks out and catches them just like you would ice fishing.
Good Luck.

We will be at pib 2-17 to 2-20. We are hoping to fish sat 2-18 and sun 2-19. Jeff says he knows somebody with a small power boat that could hold 2 or 3 people. So it seems like with a combination of boats we could all get on the water. Of course this is all very dependent on good weather. As it gets closer to the 17th if anyone is still interested in putting their boat in the water for this please pm me your cell # so we can work out the details. Again safety will be the highest priority. Thanks for the response!

so the forecast isn't looking so hot for soft or hard water haha. however, we are still going up to pib this fri 2/17. if, for some reason, the wind decides to lay down we will be prepared to fish. so, if anyone is still interested in putting a boat in the water this weekend, let me know and stay tuned...

HAHA...I thought the forecast looked pretty good!
Anything smaller than 3 footers is good, just go to the leeward side of Rattlesnake, drop anchor and jig. I'll be on Middle Bass Island till Monday, I want to drop the boat in to do this but I need to find a 12 volt pump (I borrowed one back in November) to re-winterized my boat's engine before doing so.

Tell me what kind of pump you need specifically and I'll bring one

I hope your weekend was at least a little fun.
I didn't have your number so I couldn't keep you updated. But if you seen the downtown docks at PIB you knew there wasn't going to be any boating going on. weather otherwise would have been prefect!
This is a pic of our marina...no boat was getting through that! (http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q116/Piper_pilot/marina.jpg)

A few sticks of dynamite would fix that problem. ;D
