Title: Holy Buckets!
Post by: ratherbefishing on March 03, 2012, 09:30:35 AM
Just spooled up with NanoFil for the first time yesterday, 12lb. test and Med./Hvy Rod. I threw a 3/8 drop shot weight and a floating jig and 3" grub about 50 yds. with a quick flip.
Doesn't look or feel like it should cast, but I was very impressed!

Been debating back and forth on using it. You think it's a good line for some applications? I just can't get past the invisibility, low stretch, and increased sensitivity of flourocarbon.

I have been using the 6lb. So far I am impressed. I went to the first aid kit and got one of the self adhering stretch wraps and used it to fill my spool about halfway before lining. It doesn't slip and it is a lot more economical than using a whole spool on one reel. I don't care for backing with a mono either. I have been casting 1/64 jigs heads x2 it is just amazing. I can get noticably more distance than the guys I fish with.
I have noticed it won't take any kind of sharp rock at all. They seem to just cut right through it. All in all though I like the line and I think I am gonna go a little beefier than the 6lb on my next set up.

I've been thinking about putting it on one of my backup rods. My maid rod has Sufix 832 on it, I tried it out last year and loved it. My casting distance was at least 25% farther than with mono. Now I need to find a line to spool up my baitcaster with, mono just aint cuttin it.

Joel, I've never has a flouro that could cast as well as this line. Some of the co-polymer line cast great, but they aren't as thin.
jmsteele, don't put this stuff on a baitcaster. Bird's nest soup!

Bet it'd be great for dock shooting. I can get about 50 feet with a bow and arrow trick under docks and pontoon boats. Sounds like NanoFil can get me more distance shooting under things. I'll have to give it a try.

I was actually thinking of putting it on one of my backup spinning rods, or spare spools. I am however looking for a line to put on my baitcaster. I don't know if it's just because I don't have a ton of experience with it, but I can't seem to get a long cast with my baitcaster. I just bought it last year, but I used it all summer and bagged at least 20 bass with it. I just can't seem to unlock the secrets of the baitcaster. So, I thought I would try changing the type of line I use.

If you're having trouble getting distance, try adjusting the magnetic resistance knob on the same side of the reel as the handle. It should be set so when you push the bar down your lure slowly drops to the ground, but your line doesn't backlash. Also try Blakemore's Reel Magic spray on your line. That helps distance too by reducing line memory.

I readjust the braking system every time I tie on a new lure. That was one of the first thing I learned about this type of reel. Before I figured that one out I had a backlash every other cast. I'll check out that reel magic stuff though. I have been hesitant to use it, because I wasn't sure what kind of scent it leaves on the line. It won't scare the fish away will it?

No, I leave about 8-10 feet of line hanging off the rod tip then I spray the spool and let it soak into the line. I've never had a problem with reduced catch rater after spraying the spool. I always keep it away from the lure, though, just to be safe. And I always spray a shad, garlic, or crawfish scent on my lure regularly, depending on which type of lure I'm fishing.
