what do you use to get ice jigs loose once snagged on something like a christmas tree?
i use 4 lb test....

If I happen to find structure that I could get snagged up on, I drill a few feet off of it so I won't get hung up. If your on deep water, it can be a bit tougher to avoid it with baits like jiggin raps, though. They tend to swim in circles, and the deeper you are the bigger the circle. You might have to back off a bit more to avoid hang-ups. Even if you're 10ft off the Christmas tree, you'll be able to attract the fish.

Have on old reel spooled with 20+ pound test and make a homemade plug knocker out of a sinker and piece of frayed rope. If the sinker doesn't knock it off the snag, the rope will snag the hooks and you can pull it off and just straighten your hook. I hate not to fish right over the cover, I get more bites on the cover.

I was thinking about it, and you could probably fashion a plug knocker out of a depth finder too.
I usually fish shallow water, and am set only about a foot and a half off of any structure. Being that close, I've never notice a drop in catch rate. But, the hang up rate certainly drops.

an old spark plug works decent as a plugknocker in shallow water.
