Title: 1/7/2013

Made it out for the first time today. Didnt get out until 230 but it was nice getting out there. Went out and fished 12ft. in between the 1st 2 islands and ended up with around 30 fish. Mixed bag of crappie, gills and perch. Almost all the fish came between 445 and 6pm. Caught them all about 1 ft. off the bottom. caught them on jigs that I make in gold and in glow. They wouldnt bite on maggots or plastics but would eat the waxworms. Never really marked any suspended fish. The ice was 5 in where I was at. I must caution everyone that while I spudded my way out the main trail I hit thru with 1 good hit 3 different times. The first spot was on the trail out due west of the first island and the other 2 times were within the next hundred yards. I forgot to put the strap on my spud around my wrist and the 3rd time it went thru it went right to the bottom of the lake. If anybody snags a green 2 piece spud please let me know. I loved that spud. lol. I will be back sometime tomorrow so if you see my black and orange otter flip over come up and say hi. Good luck to you all and please be safe.

The bad spot is right on the path everyone is walking out on as your walking on the west side of the first island. I would have marked it but didnt have anything I could leave. All 3 spots were on the path. They were only about 6 ft. wide. Im going to get another spud before I head back out. They were all where there is any or was snow at. Just make sure to spud your way out and you should be fine. Once the sun went down the lake was rockin and rollin making some ice. Hopefully it will hold out for this warm weather

Hopefully enough of the bad ice will melt off and once it gets cold we just add some clear ice on whatever is left!

Had my uncle put a 8in "T" handle on top that is much wider than the base of the spud he welded for me. Also put a small chain link as a loop for a rope or strap just under the handle. A few years back, I put my buddies spud right threw the ice on Erie checking a crack. Looking down the small hole it made I could still see the top of the bar. It got hung up on shove ice that pushed under the crack. I was able to reach my fingers in and get it back!! After that a rope or T hande was a must. Spud bars are the best tools on ice. Sorry got off topic a bit. ;)
