Title: lofty February goal!
Post by: slabslayer on January 28, 2013, 02:26:21 PM
I'm hoping February is the opposite of this month, wall to wall ice.  I'm trying to get a personal best crappie thru the ice.  My best is 16" from a public water.  I have a 17 1/2 from a private pond.  I want to ice one over 16" from a public lake in February.

Thats a good goal,to catch one that size from a public fishery is a real trophy, private lakes and ponds dont see nearly the fishing pressure and have a much greater chance at producing  large fish, not to mention i have seen ponds wherw the fish are actually hand fed pelletized food.

My dream is to watch a 12" gill swallow a hand painted glow jig on my camera. There is a lot to learn from cameras and flashers. Trial and error is the best solution..... that is unless you can remember what worked good in a similar situation.

I have to agree on icing a nimi walleye. Never pulled one thru a hole there but have always tried and wanted to. Its been on my ice fishing bucket list for a long time. I got my 17 1/2 inch crappie at the Old State Park a few years ago. I have accepted the fact that I will most likely never get a bigger crappie and I screwed up by eating it instead of hanging it on the wall. If I ever get close again its going straight to taxidermy. I really want a 30 inch eye for the wall. Thats #1 on the list.

Not sure if we'll have safe ice by Friday (2/1), but hoping another night or two should re-lock many inland lake bays and by early next week most lakes should be safe for drilling holes again.

There use to be eyes in wingfoot. They quit stocking it at least 20 years ago if I remember correctly. I lost a monster fish at the hole 2 years ago that I do believe was an eye but could have been a catfish. I have heard rumors that a few guys caught a couple but they were not credible reports. Walleye need moving water like a river to spawn and wingfoot lacks that feature. I think that it is possible that there is a few remaining in the lake but if there is it is very few. The reports of wingfoot eyes that I heard were of fish around 18 -24 inch. If there were eyes in there they would be really old and I would have to guess they would be around 28 to 30+ inch fish. That is one of my main reasons that I am getting a camera. I want to look at entire bottom of that lake so I can see whats around. Hopefully I will find that giant school of jumbo perch too.  ;D

I have a camera and would love to let you use it. Much knowledge can be gained from actually seeing what you are fishing. PM me if you are interested.
