Title: I can't wait
Post by: jmsteele187 on September 26, 2013, 08:42:12 AM
I can't wait for the new ice fishing season!  After only getting out once last year and none the year before, I'm ready for a nice cold winter.  I do have a feeling that most of my fishing will be done in Michigan though.  Up here in Toledo there just isn't much going on, unless Erie freezes up good.  I have one spot within 15 minutes of my house, but I'm not sure how the panfish are.  The gills are usually all dinks.  I did however pull a nice FO crappie out of there in the spring while kayak fishing, so I'm hoping the crappie bite will be pretty good.  I also still have a lot of gear that hasn't had much use from the lack of ice, the last couple years.  Here's to, hopefully, a great ice season!
Title: When does the first freeze of the fall season normally occur?

When does the first freeze of the fall season normally occur?

A temperature of 32 degrees fahrenheit has officially been recorded
as early as Sep 28th at Cincinnati...Sep 21st in Columbus and Dayton.
However...elements such as topography...urban and rural setting and
placement of recording instrument can create wide variations in
temperatures across an area.

National Weather Service temperatures are officially taken at an
elevation of five feet above the ground...but the temperature at
ground level may be colder. On typical fall nights when frost
occurs...the temperature at the five foot level may read 36 degrees
while at the ground level it is actually the 32 degrees needed to
form frost.

The following reference table will give an idea as to when the first
freezing temperatures might occur...based on the latest 30 years of
climatological data available at each of the listed locations. A
graphical presentation of the average first freeze date and the
termination of the frost/freeze headlines for the season will be
available on our website at www.NWS.NOAA.Gov/iln/ (http://www.NWS.NOAA.Gov/iln/).

I am with you on that. Cant wait.

We are starting a new division of the Great lakes largemouth Series next summer out of Toledo and we had an open event a few weeks ago.

That is a big body of water with a lot of marinas around. Ever ice fish around Maumee Bay?

I have not.  The last couple years have been pretty tough when it comes to ice.  Last year I was only able to get out one and I had to travel up to Michigan to do that.  The year before, ice was pretty non existent.  Three years ago, when I got back into ice fishing, I was able to get out once, but took a week of vacation to fish and all the ice melted the first day on the first day.  This year, I'll probably try to head up to Michigan again.  I'll also try to check out some of the marinas that are closer to me, but that will be more toward the western part of the bay, in closer to the shore.  If we get a good freeze, it would really be nice to get on some walleye or jumbo perch.  There is also a smaller lake about 10 minutes away from me, where I'll be trying to get on some crappie and maybe a few northerns I've heard rumors about.  I may end up spending most of my time there instead of the bays and marinas off Erie.
