Title: Nimi 2/15/16
Post by: slabslayer on February 15, 2016, 12:50:24 PM
Hit Nimi today north end at C-2 for a bit with z400 and icebucketjohn. Ice was not safe. 2-2 1/4" max. Water would pour out of your hole when you drilled it. Ice was cracking not in a good way. I would not recommend fishing, and when everyone else left, so did I. Not safe to fish alone. But I did get some perch. A couple nice keepers, but most were only 6-7" .  Was pounding the bottom with a #10 chartreuse and orange tungsten jig with a single wax worm. Those dead sticking weren't catching as many fish. The aggressive pounding was calling them in, and when they showed up on the vex,I slowed down the pounding to more of a light twitch and they took it almost every time. I was fishing in 11' of water. Any kind of snowfall overnight will kill Nimi, if it misses us and stays cold, we might get another day or 2. But the weekend will ruin the unsafe ice that's there for sure.

I guess I will be the one to ask the question. Why would you stay and fish on ice that you have deemed unsafe and posted as such. It can give people the wrong idea not to mention it could have ended badly for your group.

In hindsight, not a good idea. There were 5 guys there when I arrived and I didn't realize until I got on the ice and drilled a hole it was like that. I didn't spud my way out, which i should have. Lesson learned, never assume because there are guys on the ice that its OK. Probably shouldn't have stayed, but desperation to ice fish at least 1 time this year got the better of me. If I would've been alone, I wouldn't have fished. We all had proper safety gear, didn't venture out very far, and had numbers and a rope if somebody went in. I'm posting to warn others of the conditions, didn't want anyone to see us out there and assume everything is safe and just walk out onto dangerous ice. I can't stress enough IF I WAS ALONE, I WOULDN'T HAVE FISHED!  But we had safety in numbers and fished shallow water near our vehicles, nobody walked very far at all. Always check your own ice!  Ice is never safe, no matter the thickness.

Was a C1 before daylight today, Monday 2/15. Met Kevin & Blake. They decided to hit the area on the other side of the Oil Storage Tank. I Took the spud bar and hardly found any really safe ice off the boat ramp. Steve Z400 showed along with Slabslayer Joel. Couldn't move much. Ice was very very sketchy. All of us caught some perch and an occasional dink gill. Called it quits at 10:30 and headed to OSP. Walked out with a buddy and my red spud bar at OSP. Didn't fish, but Stayed for an hour and went home.

The ice is better at OSP, but still a far cry from what it should be after last weekends bitter temps. The snow put a screeching halt to any further ice production

NIMMY ICE IS UNSAFE

Nimmy hasn't produced the quality, quantity, size range or species diversity this season.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ONCE TOUTED FISHERY????
