Title: 1/7/18 report and the cops
Post by: wballard77 on January 07, 2018, 02:14:51 PM
Had a great morning of catching tons of perch. Ice is thick fishing is good.... But me and a few people were escorted off of the ice by the Marysville police.

Why?  I thought that was a public lake?

It's against a city ordinance. Even though the odnr approved this location for ice fishing Marysville law supercedes odnr law

Did you verify this? I just glanced through the city code 951 that covers parks and all it says about ice is that you are only allowed to ice skate in approved areas. I might call and inquire tomorrow.

I'm going to call tomorrow, but I'm not sure who I should contact. I know a lot of people are upset.

Since when does a local city ordinance preside over state law?  I always thought that the laws trickled down, not up.  Of course, I am not a lawyer!  Too bad you cannot legally fish there.

Made some phone calls today. They do have a city ordinance against it. 952 was added just to cover the reservoir. Section H, I believe, states you may not ice fish. The city manager said they wish they could allow it, but can’t. He stated that since it is used for city water it creates voids under the ice and is unsafe to be on.

I've only been ice fishing for about 3 years now so I haven't see a lot of ice but is this really an issue or is Marysville trying to find an excuse?  I understand the concept but I know they do a lot of fishing on the Lima reservoirs and there are a few other reservoirs listed on this board so what makes Marysville different?  If I remember correctly when they first opened Marysville reservoir they didn't allow any fishing.  I'm wondering if they just don't want people out there.

The city seems to be uptight about everything, I'm sure its a liability issue.
