Title: anyone...anyone???
Post by: wballard77 on December 18, 2010, 03:59:11 AM
Anyone fish killdeer on ice? Its killer place in the spring! I was wondering if anyone has been out on the lake this year. or ever? i've got all the structure mapped out on GPS and I would love it if a few of us could get together and make a day of it.

Sounds like you will have some good spots to go out and try. I hope you find someone in your area. Yjo might post something under the new board Fishing Partners.

Keep us posted and be safe.

I was loking at the map and it looks like it might be a great lake to fish. Can you give us some info on the lake? How is the ice now, What do you catch, where is it located, Is it a upland lake, and how far of a walk is it to the island.

Maybe we can get a group of guys to hit it together.

Thanks

Killdeer is a upland reservoir, It’s about 3/8 mile walk or ride to the island from the ramp, It’s is a great fishery in the spring and fall. I’m sure it would be lights out on the Ice as well. I’m not sure how thick the Ice is currently. I might run up Tues. or Wed. and check it out.  The lake has a very high catch rate, and not many people fish it. It has a lot of Walleye and Smallmouth as well as some of the biggest Blue Gills in the state. This lake is very clear with 6-7 visibility. (Great if you have a Camera)
The reservoir has a lot of structure to fish (I could email Lowrance waypoints or post them if anyone wants them)

Stocked by the Division of Wildlife: Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Walleye, Yellow Perch, White Crappie, Brown Bullhead, and Channel Catfish. Introduced through Tymochtee Creek are Rock Bass, Green Sunfish, and White Sucker.

the Ice it 2.5" thick and doesn't have much snow on it. I didn't go out very far it might be thicker in other spots

i would love to go to killdeer and fish it through the ice. i have fished some of the ponds around it through the ice and have done fairly well on the gills. Always wanted to fish the res but never have (through the ice) if the cold we have last all year I may just have to go up there and give it a shot, if you are planning a trip and don't mind the company i would love to go. It is usually me and another buddy that fish hard water, and that is all the company I can manage. I mostly fish for pan fish, and would love to try for some of those perch. My grandfather used to fish this lake alot back in the day but I never got a chance to fish it with him. I know that it has great structure and good fish just seldomly get up there to fish it. Again let me know if you are planning a trip and keep me posted on the thickness of the ice I am goign to put this on my to do list for the winter.

It should be safe now but, with all of the warm weather coming I really don't want to chance it. I really hope it doesn't destroy the ice!

I know where to find them during soft water season, If I could get a few people together to check the ice thickness I think we could catch a ton of them. it should be safe in a few days.

OK....i have been watching this thread develop, figured i will chime in my two cents since the up ground was in my back yard for many yrs. Just to raise everyones awareness . The lakes map doesn't truly represent the true water levels. a few yrs back the division of water discovered slipping in the walls of the up ground, they decided to lower the water levels considerably to lesson the pressure against the walls and reduce the risk of a wall blowout. They will not repair the up ground, saying it would cost too much to repair and its never been used as an actual water supply, it was built as an experiment in up ground building. there was talk about draining it completely and breaching the walls, turning it into another marsh. But this has not happened, and i seriously doubt it will anytime soon. The div. of wildlife does not maintain it, belongs to the div of water.    Also div. of wildlife stopped the stocking program the following yr that the div of water lowered the levels.

The ice can be very, very weird out there, please use caution.

Keep in mind that there is a 10 bluegill, 10 crappie limit and a bass slot length on killdeer plains and yes the up ground falls under this.

I wish you all well, look forward to reading about your trip.

I just looked at the states map, looks like they have updated it, and it does now more accurately represent water levels. sorry about that.

Do you still live close to Killdeer? I live 45-50 min away and its hard for me to get up there to check it when i know that other waterways are safe. if i could find someone to tell me that its 5" at the ramp id be willing to check the rest myself with a spotter.

And those bronco gills have the bronco parasites to go with it!  Can't remember the technical name, but the flesh of the fish will look like its been hit with a pepper shaker, and if your really lucky, when you clean them you will get to watch the white larvae stage crawl out of it.

Remember, muzzleloader season is this weekend, and thats a popular area.

good luck

That’s good to know! I most likely wouldn’t keep it unless it was big enough to mount. But for the date I was thinking of the 16th  but man would that be a bad day on the ice if you got hit buy a stray 50. Cal. Sabot

People have been out on Killdeer!!!
I drilled a hole @ the ramp it was 8” thick @ 6‘deep.  However a pressure crack is forming close to the ramp area. The ice must be getting thicker because it sounds like a intergalactic war is going on.

Sunday @ 8am is my plan. Catching fish shouldn't be an issue if we can get out to the reef complex near the island. I haven't caught a Perch or White Crappie out of there yet (never fished for) but I know they were stocked in Killdeer like crazy. I have caught Walleyes, SM & LM. Bass, Catfish, Bluegill, Rock Bass.

I also think it would be nice if we could get a few members out and dissect the lake

Were headed up to Michigan on Sat to do some fishing, If i am back, i just might come down and join you all.
Crappies are there, hard to track down and catch. Perch have always, in my opinion been few and far between.....this res isnt what it used to be.

I mostly go after the smallies. but when jig fishing I catch a ton of walleye. in most lakes with Perch you hook a few now and then bass fishing, must be a very small population. I hope to see you Sunday.

thats all I had for years! if my buddy dont go you can sit with me. on clear lakes sometimes it helps to hide the sun. If he does show I have a 1 pakshack you could use its small but works.

Went out today. caught maybe 30 bluegill, and 7 walleye <--- all small, and 2 smallmouth bass.
had a camera it looks like all of the fish are in one area. and its not the deep area. if you go out you can tell that I made Swiss cheese of the reef areas and the deep hole found them in the saddle area of the 3 reefs 300 ft NW of the island bluegills are in the stump reef area.

If no one is goign would someone mind pointing me where to start? i know there are reefs and humps all over but I have no idea where they are. I really don't care what I catch just want to get something on the end of the line. Eyes or perch would be great but at this point anything will do. have a vex and shanty now so I am ready to go. I wish I could go! But I gotta to work Fri-Mon. I had planed on going today but I have a sick kid. Do you have a GPS? I have the reefs way pointed. to get to the good spots is a walk with an almost 6 year old so we only fished the 2 closest reefs to the ramp only yielding a White Crappie and a Channel Cat.  Ice is thick 1.5” hard Ice 3” slush  10” good ice.
