Whats really weird, is that i just talkd to my brother. He fishes lake Simco in Canada every weekend for jumbo perch when the ice is on. He said a crew of 15 guys only managed about 35 perch in two days. Typically, all limit each Day. Seems like something that we will never understand may have been going on from an atmospheric/meterlogical perspective.

This last weekend was generally a tough eye bite for most that I saw, talked with, including me. Kind of surprising since the bite was good during the week and weather seemed perfect Sat with exception of lack of wind. Though they would go Sun am in the snow, but I could not find them. Switched over to hunt crappie on Saturday and that was a really good move. Very nice fish with the bite starting around noon and lasting until I switched over to try and find the eyes.

Yeah NF area was a bit tough Sunday afternoon, but I nailed a few in the AM. The channel at Black Hawk has not been productive, but I can tell you that I have had several saugeye limits this year out in the main lake heading down that channel to get out there.
Fish are scattered. After ice fishing this lake even before saugeye started to be stocked, I find it not unusual for this time of year. If the ice holds for a few weeks they will pack up and get more aggressive. Certainly, some of the big old hawgs will snap your jig bait of choice. The only thing better than wrestling those 6-10 lb whoppers through an 8 inch hole is to have everyone around look in amazement as you drop her back down into that same hole. Keep the 19-21 eaters and release the whoppers for the next crazy cold weather fisherperson to snare.

Personally, I dont use fireline. I like 2lb flurocarbon, single jig, tied with a small loop surgeon knot for the IL panfish.

No, don't like to do that but wore than willing to share techniques,tips,and generally what works/worked for me.
I primarily fish IL nowadays. It has taken some time to figure it out. I have learned that pressured fish in shallow water on this lake make for a tough ice adventure.....especially next weekend when the gas augers fire up.

Fished in/around Lucys on Sunday. A few here, a few there. Moved over to GR and tried a few historical hotspots.... nothing. Then moved way off the beaten ice path to a very accessible area that I have seen as much boat pressure during soft water as any other part of the lake. I know the fall crappie run there is great so gave it a shot late Sunday afternoon. Managed 7 nice gills and 4 whopper crappie in the last hour. Went back on Monday am and early bite was not so hot. Moved about 1 foot deeper and proceeded to hammer them from 10 -2. At 2 the bite slowed as the wind shifted to NNE. At 2:30 it was over. 12 gills 8" or better and 19 Crappie > 11 inches. ( About 40 < 11 back in the hole ) 4mm Tungsten jigs with red spikes way outfished other jigs with waxies. Dead stick would not touch. Spring bobber with micro increments raise and fall was the ticket. 2lb fluorocarbon also outfished 4lb trilene with the exact same jig about 2 to 1. Consistent story, get off the beaten pressure path and move around. One foot in depth ( less than 15 yards ) made all the difference in the world. I did not see one other person in the area. I think I found a new spot for the hard water.

I checked Blackhawk as well. Same story about 1.5 .... bar through on first whack. Foot went through next to where I stepped on. Did fish a channel with 2.5 and managed 11 nice gills over 8 and 4 crappie 10-11. I like most of you thought more ice would have formed. Come on 15 below!

On ice this am in my channel. 2 inches clear and hard ice. On issue is that gills I found were about the same size. Will be able to go about anywhere by Thursday with 0 degrees tomorrow.

Drove the entire lake. Still a bit high, but about 70% of main lake still has some ice. Blawkhawk, Pony / Long still locked in but not safe. About 1 - 1.5 of soft ice everwhere. A bit muddy, but cleaning up. Reserve channels appeared to be much cleaner which is typical. Open muddy water from North Fork all the way past Dream.
Normal panfish areas should be good by weekend. Saugeye humps and bumps may be a bit iffy unless we get into single digits.

Water was churned up pretty well with the wind and previous rain...... Four days under the glass will help. Ground freeze will help as well.
If still stained later in week I will stick with blue/black for the crappies and deep red, black, or gold for the vibee loving eyes.

Hope I did not jinx us on the predicted weather trend. In any event, when searching and dunking for IL crappies through the ice try this: Work your jig from the bottom upwards in the water column. Stop every four to six inches ,twitch, and then continue to work upwards. Typically this will produce many more fish than simply fishing above or with the gills and the drop/wiggle routine. Never,ever  , use more than 4lb test and try to use 2lb. Speaking of gills, my favorite. Start midway into the pads and drill out to the clear water. Work you way out until you find them. Worst thing for IL ice fishing......... A power auger. in five foot water in don't take much to spook everything. Nothing worse than being on a school of eyes only to hear the auger fire up in the middle of the run. Try to avoid at all costs, but if medically necessary or age is taking its toll I understand. If not for those reasons then continue to spook the IL fish off and any tips you gain from a site like this will be fruitless. Do you want to be the 80 or the 20? 20% off the fisherman on IL catch 80% of the fish. Tight lines and hope to see all having fun , hopefully by next weekend if the wind calms down by Monday night.........

Pimples work well,,,,, sometimes. From my experience, they seem to work better later in the ice year. Some fellas swear by them. I always have a few in my bag, but I prefer to fish Vibes on Indian. No larger than 1/4 OZ. 3/16 do work well also and upon th right conditions, the bonus will be some slab crappies. It seems as though the days they wont hit a vibee are the days pimples work better.....
Other jiggin baits will also work. Jigging rapalas, pompano spoons ( saltwater bait ), and other jiggin type spoons. Have not tried the Jigging Shad Rap yet, so no comment.
Blue / Silver, Orange / Gold , etc. Somedays it does not matter, others you need to have the right color. I never fish the same color for more than 20 minutes. With two rods pumping, you can go through the Vibee rainbow in time to see if it makes a difference on that particular day.

Blackhawk was tough for eyes on Sat. Moundwood was none the better early Sunday. Finally found them on Sunday afternoon, or the weather drove the feed.... not sure. Nice Fish, no one in area. Bite started at 2 and I was done by 4. Orange/Gold, and straight gold Vibes got the job done.
I like to hunt around and get off the beaten path. Worked for me today.
Ice scary at best. Hope if firms up a bit overnight.
Headed out for crappies in AM before the melt.
I am new to board. I wont give out GPS coordinates, but always willing to share info hard and/or soft water.
I fish Indy 75- 100 days a year.
My tip for the day . +/- 6 inches in dept change will hold the eyes. Off a few feet and game over. Handheld GPS works, but note that with constaint dredging and silting, it can change year to year. Vex is the ticket.
