Out Of State Ice Fishing Trips / Re: se Michigan
« on: March 08, 2015, 08:14:17 AM »
Thursday evening after my work seminar I went to the bass pro shops and got my license. Friday after the sminar was over at 3:00 I went to Cass lake, because it was the closest lake to my hotel. Ice was about 2ft thick. I moved 3 times and ended up in 14 ft. I caught some small perch and a bluegil. Then I saw a mark up high on my fish finder and when i came up a northern pike smashed my jig. That was the first pike I have ever caught. I stayed till dark.

With advice from sportsmans direct, Saturday I went to lake st clair and fished out of!f the metro park. That was an interesting place. There had to of been 1000s of shantys spread across the lake. I started in only 4 ft of water but it was very clear and I could see schools of perch swimming under me. I caught a few Dinks. In the afternoon I moved out to 6ft and caught a few bigger perch but no keepers. I should have moved more but the snow on top made it difficult. The ice there was almost 2ft also. What a adventure! I will be back up in a few weeks for another week of training, so I am likely to do it all again.

I am going to be in Michigan for a work seminar end of next week. I am thinking of taking my ice fishing gear along and staying an extra day or 2. I am wondering if it would be worth it? Or if anyone can suggest a lake in the area. I will be somewhat close to lake st clair so I wonder if that wold be worth a try? My other option would be to stop by crane creek or cawtaba on the way home but I don't think I want to walk out and it might be a too late to get a guide.

Thanks

Is that my name on the list? I finally won a prize from doing something that I love! It was a great season this year. Now I can tell my friends and family that all the time I spent out there on the water was for more than just fun and a few fish dinners because I got free gear for next year.

Ya since I bought enough gear this year it would be nice to go again. I am thinking about trying to walk out Monday too.  Sounds like they are sending the ice cutter to the islands next week. I'm already a little nervous since it got warm. I'm not sure how much that will affect the area people fish.

Me and my brother and 2 friends drove through the blizzard to Catawba state park to go on a air-boat guided ice fishing trip. We rode approximately 4 miles around the island to someplace between mouse island reef and starve island reef. We were in 28 foot of water. We ended up with only 6 fish. The current was really strong most of the day. I landed 2 and lost 2 at the hole ( stuck on ice/ lack of gaffing skills). The fish came on silver and gold pimples, silver/blue buckshot spoon, purple pimple, and jigging shad raps. Not many fish but still great memories ,that will last a lifetime, of fishing with my brother. I dont think i will ever forget when I had the biggest fish i have ever hooked, on ice, at the hole and he tried to gaff it. Then when he said "o no" and i look over to see my spoon wrapped around the gaff. Good times.

Fished off the Bonner rd ramp area today suggested by Chuck at the bait store. Ice was a good 10 - 12 inches. I managed to catch 3 undersize eyes in about 18 foot of water. Two came on a green sweetish pimple and one on a jiging shad rap. I also caught a channel catfish in 22 ft on a pimple. I moved a few times and marked fish in every hole. I almost messed up my auger today. I was looking at my navionics app and thought I was drilling in 12 foot of water but it was actually less than 2 foot. Apparently the depths on the map are summer pool level and not winter. All the snow made it hard to move around but hopefully most of it will melt off on sat.

I also fished north reservoir today. I fished 6 ft to 8ft of water. I couldn't keep the small bluegills off my line. I caught mostly small gills and a few dink crappie and perch. I also hooked a big bass that was fun on the ultralight. I managed to catch 6 of what I believe are white bass that I didn't know were in that lake. On a side note I think I prefer to fish on less thick ice because the people blowing by on snow mobiles was somewhat irritating and loud.

FYI there are sunken  Christmas trees off both sides of the parkinglot

i have a clam 2000 and when there was no snow it was a sailboat. I just bought some 6 inch lag bolts and drilled a few holes in the floor of the shanty. and if its going to be windy i take the cordless drill along and zip them right in.

I got one this year. The pre-molded bucket holder places are pretty much worthless. Iv been putting my stuff in a Milk crate it is easier to strap than a bucket. one other thing i have done is when i fold the shanty up the side that is the top i dont put the hole cover lid back on. It leaves a nice hole to hold your smaller stuff.
