Buckeye lake / Re: Advice for fishing on Buckeye?

Greg - I'll start by saying that I am no expert on saugeye fishing so take this response as knowing that in advance.  I would suggest parking at Fairfield Beach and walking toward the Marsh past the islands.  You will usually see people anywhere between those islands and the marsh.  I would drill some holes, try for 15 minutes, if nothing, keep moving.  I am not sure how old your son is but if he has limited patience, I would suggest fishing 4:00 p.m. to just after dark as that has been my experience as the best time.  I would start with minnows, Vibes, jigging raps.  Note that the bites can be light at times so pay close attention. With the minnows, you should at least be able to catch some small saugeyes and hopefully a few big ones.

I had 5 short 8-10" saugeyes yesterday, mainly on fatheads (bass size).  I did not take the shanty as I was only there for 2 hours and holes froze almost immediately, but still good to get out

Just got back from Buckeye.  Fished the Marsh area from 3:30-6:00.  Caught 5 small (8-10") saugeyes.  Not sure where the big boys and girls were hiding. Guy next to me also catching the dinks.  I was on the ice and catching fish so I can't complain.

What was the bait of choice?  I plan to get out tomorrow.

David - How was the ice out there?  I am no small guy so just trying to assess if it is worth the trip for me

Unfortunately my weekend is shot as my daughter has a volleyball tournament both Saturday and Sunday.  Definitely need to make it out soon.  Good news is that weather report indicates that we will have some solid ice for a few more weeks with multiple nights getting down in the single digits.  I will ping you when I am heading out.  May need to be some short evening trips as I am only about 30 minutes from the lake.

Fool4Fish - Curious how deep you are fishing.  Not looking for spots but generally deeper water or shallower?  Sounds like an awesome day out there, congrats!

Eyejig - Nice day on the ice.  Thanks for the report.  What did you catch them on?

I did not have much time yesterday but fished from 3:45-5:45 p.m.  I was out at the marsh and had a number of bites (6-7) most coming around 4:45-5:00.  Caught one 15" incher and sent it back.  Had two other good fish on and lost two small to mid-size at the hole.  I was using a JawJacker which was first time using.  Seemed to not be getting a great hookset as a number of the fish came off or missed when it went off.  I was using a Swedish pimple with a 4-5" tag line with a red hook and crappie minnow on the bottom.
