General Discussion / Shanty Tow Bars
« on: February 27, 2015, 12:30:49 PM »
I'm sure this has been covered, and in my defense I used the search feature but had no luck.  Are shanty tow bars required on lake erie?  Ill be hauling a smitty sled with a suitcase shanty.  I have an idea on how I will make them but won't have time before my trip tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

I've always used the ones that look like coil springs. They are a pain to thread the line through and sometimes the line loops between the coils, but I have never needed anything else.

I have a 4 year old eskimo stingray and it starts first pull nearly every time.  The only time i have issues is when I set it on the ice with the carb down.  This severely floods that little engine and then takes like 4-5 pulls to clear the cylinder of excess gas before it starts.  When you lay it down on the ice (setting the handle on the ice) make sure the tank is closest to the ground or it will flood.  If you do this too many times I imagine it will foul the plug and make matters worse.
You do have to make sure the gas tank vent screw is closed or if the tank is full it will drip gasoline out

Not sure if it matters but the wheelbase is 75", almost double than that of the average 4X4 ATV, and the track (width) is 12" wider.

Does anyone take their UTV (side by side) on the ice?
I sold our Honda 350 4X4 to get a can am commander.
The commander weighs almost 1300 lbs.
The information I have seen says 6" for ATV or sled and 8" for passenger car.
I was just wondering if there is much of a chance of taking this on the ice in Ohio.

It says it is required in the rules/regulations pamphlet, but I have spoken to a few ODNR reps and they have all said it is not really enforced since your lot allowed to leave your shanty out, no permanent enclosures.

You do any good on the perch? Seen some ATV tracks on the ice and was wondering if they were yours.

Well I'm glad someone is catching them.  I tried all day Friday and Sunday.  Had one on Sunday but lost him.  I am convinced there was not a single fish to be found at blackhawk/Lucys on sunday.

Not to argue but the only winter activities I seen listed were sledding, Cross-country skiing, Ice boating, ice skating, and Ice fishing. I would love to take an ATV out there with a gas auger.

Anyone riding quads yet? Any info on the bite?
I didn't think this was allowed?

Stopped by kiser to check the ice and seen about half a dozen people strung out over the entire east side of the lake. Walked out in the middle of a few shanties and measured the ice at 5" nice clear ice. Had a good powder snow cover. Didn't know if anyone was catching but will probably find out for myself tomorrow

I've heard 6-8" on another ohio fishing forum, but would like to hear from a few more sources once everyone can start moving around outside again.  Seems like a stretch to me
