C.J. Brown / Trying to find bait shop
« on: April 15, 2016, 08:50:59 AM »
I just tried to look up the phone number for the bait shop there near the dam and it shows as "permanently closed". Is that true, and if it is are there any other sources for live bait on the south side of the lake? Thanks.

My husband and I have ice fished up there a few times, getting better results on the other side of the lake from the marina. We've also fished from shore and our boat. We've caught some very nice crappie and white bass as well as channel cat. Our better results were using bass minnows and we'll use minnows next time we get on the ice. Spikes mostly caught dinks. We've never caught anything worthwhile at the marina, but we're not regulars and don't know the best techniques to use there. Still looking for a keeper walleye.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. IF these winds calm down, we'll just plan on the marina.

Anybody think this cold snap will give us good ice by Monday? Hubby and I would like to head over to the overlook, but if it's too iffy, we'll stay on the docks at the marina. What do you  think?

Thanks for the info. We'll wait until you local guys have good news. We did get out on a friend's local farm pond yesterday. No snow on it and pretty consistent ice on the area we fished.

Small Pond Reports / Farm pond in Preble County

We headed over to a friend's farm pond near West Alex to fish. Had about 2 inches of white ice on top of 3 inches of clear. Things were slow, but the farm owner and my other half caught BIG bluegills while doing a slow jig. Hoping this mixed precip coming tomorrow doesn't queer it.

How soon do you suppose we will have good ice on CJ? I'm assuming some of you have been fishing off the docks at the marina? What about the other side of the lake? We are getting itchy to get out.

Sad. The women don't know what they're missing. I used to out fish my hubby, but you don't have to worry about me showing anyone up - I've lost my mojo.

We were sitting among all of you in our shelter. Took a while to figure out what to drop, but finally started to get some decent bites and managed one keeper crappie and a nice white bass.(Fried up real nice last nice with some hush puppies.) From listening to the guys around us, it sounded like fish were spotty as far as hitting in one place and not hitting - maybe twenty feet away. Am I the only woman who ice fishes?
Ran down to Rush Run yesterday and the management hasn't plowed the drive since at least three snows ago. Hope to get back to CJ if the ice holds.

C.J. Brown / Heading to CJ Saturday

Alright, fellas, where should we go? At least it won't be brutally cold, so we should hit the ice earlier in the day than last week. If you see our Tamarack, stop by and say howdy.
Looks like we have the big thaw next week.

Wow! You aren't the guy that was way out from the dam are you? We fished about three hours (blue Clam Tamarack) off the dam. I had a couple of light strikes; hubby caught two crappie - one legal. He threw it back since it was skinny. Just as well considering the lack of fish thereafter. Fingers crossed conditions hold for next weekend.

We were skunked on Sunday at the marina, too. We hope to get out tomorrow, so the question is - do we return to the marina or access the lake somewhere else? I'm guessing that the people who are catching are using live minnows?
