Indian Lake / Ice / Clarity ?
« on: February 07, 2018, 09:36:17 AM »
So I am in a state of depression.  Had a four day trip planned to Simcoe for jumbo perch, and now they are calling for 6-12 inches of snow on the travel day of Friday for the entire route.  Not gonna do that towing a trailer/bike.

Any local updates on Indian ice/water clarity?

Just left ice   Fished around north fork area all day
Worst day in ice all year. Zero keeper eyes or crappie. Terrible.

Fished it last night and definitely was starting to stain up.   Did manage to jig a few up, 1 at 5+lbs.  Something about an eye with a 7 inch head through an 8 inch hole keeps me going.   Coming off edges were getting weak, but ice was still very solid under the water/slush in the bay. I suspect edges really soft now at 60 with rain.   Looks like 5 days next week never getting above freezing and low singles at night. That will firm it up and should clear it up if we don't get a bunch more rain. Early in week might be sketchy, but we should be back in action next weekend, at least that is what I am hoping for.   If not, I know I will head to the state up north, to hammer some perch.

I suspect it will be fine after a warmup/moderate rain.  No ice is ever safe.   I can tell you a horror story on Lake St Clair with Pickup trucks parked on ice and 40 yards away four wheelers going through.  Carry ice picks ( cost = $ 6.99)  and watch the edges.

A semi-tough day, After 10 hours on ice Ended up with three keeper eyes and nine really nice crappies. Vibes took bigger eyes. Crappies were there but I left them for the afternoon eyes. Crappies came on 3mm. Tungsten at bottom then raise on spikes.

Although always threats of, in 20+ years of icing on IL, the  Only time I have seen any vehicles towed is when ding dongs blocked a driveway.  All streets are public.  Unless there are state placed no parking signs, you will be OK.   The issue is finding a place without a 500 yard walk to enter the ice at a public place.

It will be busy.  If your fishing anywhere but Blackhawk, get there early.

Sometimes it pays to hike.   Moved well away from the herd on Thursday.  In fact was no one within 100+ yards.   Crappie started at about 2:30 and did not stop until I had a limit about 4:30.   All came on tungsten 4mm with spike and the tail only of a micro plastic in black. Really nice fish.   Switched over to eyes and nailed 3 over 19" on custom painted silver vibe and 4 throw backs.    It will be a zoo this weekend.  After fishing IL for 20+ years, I have learned one thing as a for sure.......Stay away from the guys with the gas power augers.
