Annual Ice Out Hunger Tournament / Ice Out Hunger Ice Tournament 2015
« on: January 17, 2015, 08:52:08 AM »
Hey all! Should have posted long ago on this, my bad. The Ice Out Hunger Charity Icefishing Tournament will be held at WINGFOOT LAKE on JANUARY 31, 2015. Once again, we'll be in the Pinetree Lodge starting at 7AM. Just stop by and register. Fishing times go for 7:30AM til 2:30PM. This is a panfish tournament, so crappies, bluegills, and perch are all accepted. 10 heaviest fish, any combination.

EARLY REGISTRATION BONUS

I will take early registrations TODAY (1-17-15) at Rodmakers Shop between 10:30 and 4. I'm doing an ice seminar there at 1:30PM.

I will also be at MOGADORE BAIT & TACKLE on Saturday, 1-24 from 2pm-4pm doing early sign ups.

Once again, 100% of our entry fees/dollars raised goes to the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank. Entry fee is $10 per team(two people). We'll have coffee and donuts in the morning and lots of HOT food afterwards when we do our prize raffle and awards presentation. Come out, have some fun, make some memories on the ice. This is a family event and there is a "KIDS DIVISION" so get the young ones out there!

Thanks and again, sorry for the late notice. See you on the ice!

Hit the small cove on NW side of Congress Lake Rd. Ice was very ugly... About 2 inches of solid with 2 inches of junk on top. We fished in about 2 1/2 ft of water. I caught 3 dinks and Walt pulled a nice 8+ inch redear. Lake may be locked up but the snow in the last week made junky ice. TAKE GREAT CARE IF YOU GO OUT.

Here's a story I put together on ice safety. Story is pretty generic, but the web story has a lot of detail in it, plus a link to Ice Fish Ohio!

Beware the warm up and stay safe out there.

See you on the ice!

Nimisila / Nimisila 12-16-13 (campground cove)
« on: December 17, 2013, 06:41:26 AM »
Got to the cove around 1:30... Ice was 3 to 3 1/2 inches, but we fished it. Glad we did. Drilled a set of 4 holes and there were weeds in 3, but the one w/o really produced. Drilled another hole near that one and my friend Walt and I had a ball. Bluegills, redears, and crappie. Caught some real nice sized fish too, plus a lot of small ones. We kept 20 beauties, released the rest. Don't have an exact number as we lost count, but we had to pull between 60 and 80 fish. Look for the holes in the weeds and fish 2 inches off bottom.

General Discussion / More Good News!

As we get ready for what the "Farmers Almanac" calls "piercing cold" this Winter, I have to share some good news. I've been accepted by Clam Corporation as a "Clam Pro". I'll be helping them promote ice fishing and their products through seminars all over Ohio. Can't wait to get on some hardwater and start drilling!

WingFoot Lake / Ice Safety Story
« on: January 25, 2013, 10:32:31 AM »
I'm putting together an ice safety story today for WKYC and will be in the Akron area looking for ice fishers to talk with. I'm going to try to concentrate on Wingfoot, but will probably make it to Portage Lakes as well. Mogadore is an option too.

If anyone would be willing to bring their safety gear and talk about it with me for the story, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, on a deadline so the sooner, the better! LOL

Call me 216-346-9615 or email at [email protected]

Thanks

General Discussion / NE OH ICE Sunday
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:14:11 PM »
Well, it's getting there. Went to a few lakes today and here's what I found...

NIMISILA: Lots of open water but C-5 (campground) cove is covered. Extremely poor ice. There are two layers about 1/2 inch each, separated by about an inch of slush. DANGEROUS!!!

PORTAGE LAKES: Old State Park was about half open water. Someone with a boat may have gone through and broke it up. Going to be awhile.

WINGFOOT: About 90% covered. Ice off the boat ramp dock was 2-2 1/2 inches but white. No slush layer. I did not walk out on it but I'm hoping by next weekend it will fish. The open water was out between the two islands.

MOGADORE: Checked East side of Congress Lake Rd. Ice off the dock was about 2 1/2 inches, white with a nice, clear 3/4 inch at the bottom. Again, maybe in a week, it might be fishable.

All I can say is to pray for coldnights and no snow...
