Soft Water Fishing Reports / Local Crappie action
« on: March 01, 2018, 04:54:41 PM »
Decided not to let the rains keep stuck around the house all day. Did some wading at Local lake in NE Ohio. Caught around 60 crappie 7-11” kept 12 . Most of the fish came from 6 fow in & around the weeds. Caught them on a variety of baits. Several on a chartreuse maribou jig  lots of them came on a  1/64th jig with a 1”black Shad gulp picked up a few on a gold #6 thin wire hook and live minnow & some on itty bitty garlands. The action was pretty good despite the miserable conditions. They really wanted the jig moving today couldn’t be lazy with it due to the lack of wind it probably would have been some super hot action if there would have been some chop.

Soft Water Fishing Reports / Ice out crappie smackdown! 2-23-18
« on: February 23, 2018, 04:28:55 PM »
Did some wading at portage today and it turned out pretty dang good! Caught around 50 crappie between 7-11” fishing a 1/64th jig and 1” Black Shad gulp under a float 18”-3ft deep. Fish were caught in 4-6fow in and around the weeds. Orange and black were the top producing jig colors. Boy do I love smashing crappie on artificials! All fish were released.8)

General Discussion / Soft water panfish rod suggestions.
« on: February 21, 2018, 05:47:29 AM »
Looking for suggestions for a new panfish rod. I’m not looking to buy the most expensive or the cheapest something middle of the road. I’ve owned a few BnM rods and they were fantastic but expensive. I’ve owned a couple Wally marshal slabshakers they weren’t that expensive but didn’t seem very durable. The biggest problem for me is I’m rough on my gear to put it mildly if it can be broken I’ll break it! I’m the guy who steps on his rod getting out of the boat and breaks it. I’m the guy who shuts the rod in the fiberglass cover of my truck and busts the tip off. I’m the guy who trudges through the brambles and brush trips and breaks his rod! I’m the guy who forgets to secure his rod in the boat and drags it on the bottom of the handle from C1 at nimi to the main st ramp nearly grinding off the bottom of the rod! My stuff gets used and abused. I’m once again looking for another panfish rod I’d like something in lite or medium lite. Ultra lite doesn’t suit my needs as I tend to hook up with everything in the water that I’m not after lol. big bass ,catfish ,walleye ect. I’d like at least half a chance at landing them when I get the occasional run it with one while panfishing. I can’t stand to use a stiff rod especially when I’m working plastics or hair jigs. I’m done buying high end rods that I’ll just destroy eventually I’d rather spend more money on better reels as they tend to last much longer than the rods for me. But I break those often as well. Any suggestions for a rod that’s mid range in price and excellent for panfish but tough enough for multiple species would be greatly appreciated.

What a last day on the ice! Fished mogadore reservoir today temperatures in the mid 70s! The fishing wasn’t great around a dozen perch. The ice was getting rotten when I was coming off. Time for boat fishing and ice out crappie! 8)

Mogadore Reservoir / Lansinger 2-19-18
« on: February 19, 2018, 05:26:42 PM »
Fished Moggy out of lansinger with Bigeyurk25. I was shocked by the great condition of the ice shore ice was rough but had no problem dragging right off the dock. The rain was heavy at times but we stayed high and dry in the otter! ;D The fishing wasn’t great but it felt great to get in another trip before she’s gone. I’ll probably hit it again tomorrow I like the idea of getting a tan out there!  8)  Bigeyurk cooked up breakfast and lunch on the heater even brought some other snacks. We may not have caught a bunch but it was a great day on the water!!!

Portage Lakes / Old state park 2-16-18
« on: February 16, 2018, 04:57:44 PM »
Fished old state park from noon till 4. Lots water near shore but didn’t have a problem going out next to the boat house. first 3” of water on top of some sagging ice might have been touching bottom since it was so shallow. The ice after I got out was great over all 6-8” clear i did find some soft areas down towards the tree in the channel everyone fishes. The ice was much better away from the tree area. Caught some perch 4-7” and a few gills. On a gold tungsten jig tipped with maggots. The fish were very picky about how they would take the bait today.  Can’t get the pictures to post.

Nimisila / Nimi C1 2-15-18
« on: February 15, 2018, 02:55:37 PM »
Incoming rains and strong winds made my decision to call it a day around 2:00pm fished all over north of the duck blind pizza bay I was everywhere. Lots of open fishing holes saved me a bunch of drilling. Set up shop in pizza bay and sight fished some lots of dinks! Did see some nice ones swimming around but they weren’t wanting to eat. Caught some small perch and small gills that was all. Seemed like every hole had fish but all small. The ice was 6-9”  majority was 7”  clear black ice in surprisingly excellent condition!

Shoreline wasn’t bad when I went out little water but when I came back in it was ugly where I came off. Looked better by the ramp but I didn’t want to drag that far from my truck.  Have to wait and see how things change with the next round of warm rains.

Nimisila / 2-13-18 nimi ice conditions
« on: February 14, 2018, 06:47:16 AM »
Went out of the main st ramp around 10am. Headed south towards the dam poked around in the deep water for a couple hours caught and marked nothing. Headed back to the north and fished inside of the bay with all the pine trees in 10fow caught some redears and perch no monsters nothing to write home about. We crossed two little pressure ridges one on the main body of the lake and one going into the bay where we were fishing. After about an hour my fishing partner was gonna go check another area I wanted to stay where I was. He says “you better come look at this and sure enough 40 yards behind my shack that little ridge became a nasty wet shove! I looked out to where the one was on the main lake yep that one had grown to an impressive size as well. I’ll try to load the pictures when I’ve got time to crop them down.  Anyone headed south out of the main st ramp at nimi better use extreme caution it took my friend and I a while to find a sorta safe crossing on the main lake. We had to go clean to the middle to cross the crack was 6feet wide in some places near shore.

Regional general conditions reports / NE Ohio Lake 2-10-18
« on: February 11, 2018, 05:05:29 AM »
Hit the ice with my 10 year old son yesterday 2-10-18. Ice was 8-9” little slushy on the way out and really slushy on the way in after the rain. The bite was a little slower than expected for this location but the fishing was a blast! My son nailed an 11” crappie on his first drop! I thought it was gonna be game on at that point but it turned out to be a slower pick. Caught a bunch of gills mostly small ended up catching around 20 crappie kept 8 between 9 1/2 & 11” also kept 2 gills and 1 bass. My son totally out fished me in fact he caught 7 of the 8 crappie we kept and the bass. I was pretty proud to be getting whooped on by my own son! All in all I couldn’t have asked for a better day!

Fish were caught in 9fow visibility was not even 12” it was super dirty. Majority of the fish came on gold #6 hook and minnow fishing 6ft deep. The rest came on a gold tungsten jig and maggots.

Well had another dismal outing at a Local lake yesterday 2/9/18. The drag was nice since I got my sled back in action and gave it a little lift so I wouldn’t be plowing snow anymore. Ice was 11.5” visibility was 3ft made a few moves but I bet I only marked 30 fish in 6 hours total. Managed to catch 3 gills about 6”. There were others fishing nearby that were experiencing the same frustrating results. Can’t win every time I guess I know I can’t catch them on the couch so I’ll just keep on drilling.😎

Met a friend at a Local Lake and hit the ice. The snow made the drag awful then my sled which I’ve  known needed repair fell totally apart out on the lake. That’s my punishment for being too lazy to fix it right in the first place. The fishing was dinks city and slow for me especially since I wasn’t able to move after the sled incident. My friend was super Mobil and did much better than Me. Ice was 8” with 5-7” of snow on top conditions were clear only thing I caught was a few small gills and small perch. It really sucked when I left making multiple trips carrying all my gear back to my truck. Good thing I was only about 150 yards away! Lesson learned I’m fixing the sled up right today!

Got out to a small local reservoir today conditions were sloppy and windy for the first 30 yards 3” of slush under the 6” of snow. Ice was 8.5” visibility 2ft.  Fished in 6-7 fow only caught one little dink.  Didn’t move around much due to the wind.

Got out today for a few hours managed to catch around 40 crappie 5-11” action was great once I finally got on them in 10 fow near structure fishing 4-6’ deep with gold#6 hook and minnow and a gold pinmin and minnow. Ice was 8” visibility was 3ft conditions were sunny. Had to drill a lot of holes before I finally got on them but once I did it was game on! All in all another great day on the water!😎
