Indian Lake / Re: Indian lake ice conditions 2022

Please read this update carefully: ice is anywhere from .5 to 2.5. It is not consistent. Some people have ventured out at Long Island and this morning someone went through. Please wait for the ice to thicken more before you venture out. The person who went through spudded out and still took a bath.
The ice will get thick enough looking at the forecast, there is no need to get
Yourself in trouble. We will get on the ice this year. Please have all safety equipment regardless of how thick the ice is.

Yea, I was shocked that it locked up with all that wind. My channel has frozen overnight on and off since 3rd week of November. It’s usually locked a lot earlier than the rest of the lake. When I got up and looked out of my Florida room it was just skimmed, due to the wind. I went out and took one of the vehicles over to put Tires on and saw the main lake was locked. I was really surprised. Ice fishing is my favorite type of fishing, even though the bite from my dock and my boat are pretty good 😊

I hope I didn't jinx the season by proactively making my new smitty sled.
Build away…I bought another shanty about a month ago. If anything would have wrecked the season it would have been that :)

Indian Lake / Indian lake ice conditions 2022
« on: January 06, 2022, 10:26:55 AM »
Just wanted to post ice conditions as of this morning. 90% of the lake is locked up as of this morning. Most of your access areas are covered and the ice is thin but building. Most ice is just shy of an inch but some areas are skim. We have a few forecast days coming up where the temp goes up to high 30s but it will drop down and keep building. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

I ran over to have tires put on a vehicle and 90% of the main lake is iced up today. A few areas stayed open due to wind but they are closing up now. South and west shores are locked up. Blackhawk is locked up. Most areas are. Moundwood is still open.

Anybody have an idea of what the local water temps are?  And shoulder surgeries aren't bad, it's the 4 months of therapy that bites.
not sure where you are but my channel at Indian was frozen till the winds picked up later yesterday. Wind tonight is blowing  straight  down the channel with gusts up to 40mph. Water temp at my dock was 33.5 about 30 minutes ago. Channel has frozen on and off since 3rd week of November. If it’s wasn’t so windy the next few days it would freeze up quickly. Can’t give you any main lake temps.
If the  current forecast holds, it should make some channels walkable by the 20th. My channel just needs days in the low 30s with nights in the teens to 21 for about 5 to 7 days to be around 4 inches. High winds don’t help…

Sorry everyone, have not had time to check ice. I have been battling the flu for the last 3 days. I did drive down and see people fishing in the marina Monday. I would imagine there should be over 6 inches of ice after this cold snap. The Corp has been letting a lot of water out so some edges have collapsed. Please be careful and tie off  when checking the ice. Please use the buddy system. I won’t be able to post ice thickness anytime soon

Entire lake was locked up befor all the rain and it has stayed locked up through it. Edges took a beating but hope I can post thicknesses tomorrow. I have not been checking the CJ ice thickness yet because I have been fishing my channel at Indian, off the shore of my property, since the first big snow.

Indian Lake / Re: Thickness update??
« on: January 25, 2019, 07:29:54 PM »
the Ice thickness varies quite a bit. My channel has 7 to 8 inches.... with sketchy edges. I have a 2x10 as a walkway to get to the better ice. There were a lot of snow covered spots in other areas with pretty crappy ice before the rain so be careful. Fishing has been ok and a mixed bag of perch, crappies and Saugeye. I can’t give exact thicknesses in other areas because I have not had to travel more than 50 feet from the shore of my property :) :)

Update for today, The open areas finally froze over last night due to calm winds. With the temps being projected the ice might be 4 to 5 inches in the newly frozen areas by this weekend. They are easy to spot because they have no snow on them. They have about an inch or so of ice on them at this point. The areas that stayed frozen are in the 6 to 8 inch range. I checked a few spots today. My suggestion is to wait until this weekend if you want to go outside of the marina, taking all precautions of course. The ice is crazy looking on the main lake with heaves everywhere. You also have spots in the 6 inch areas with 1 or 2 inch areas (no bigger than 12 to 15 feet in diameter) right in the middle. They are easy to spot now, but if they become snow covered they become a problem. I'll post as I can.

Areas on the main lake froze over last night, the big wind this morning broke the ice up and pushed it over in front  of the beach. About a third of the lake is now open. All this cold weather is great but if the wind doesn't stop, it will do no good. The ice will refreeze but it will be somewhat scary in variation. My suggestion (if you are not familiar with the lake) is to stick to the Marina...move around. There are areas in the Marina that had no holes drilled in the last month, that hold fish. People gravitate to the easy/well known spots and forget some of the smaller areas that hold fish. We are going to have 2 weeks of cold. The main lake will re-freeze but the ice will vary wildly in thickness. Remember, there is NEVER any "safe" ice out there. Take all precautions and fish with a buddy. I will watch the lake and post some information. We don't need anyone taking an ice water bath.

Hey Green Pea,

I have been out on the ice a few times in the last week. There are areas where the ice is still in good shape. The problem is, it butts right up against crappy ice/open water. There is a ton of variation in the ice right now. I would stay away from the visitors over look point for awhile. I don't suggest going out anywhere that you aren't REALLY familiar with. If you do go, go with a buddy and a float suit and picks are the ticket. I have been using the east side to get out. It can be a walk but I was fishing main lake areas. Larger crappie have been in very deep, specific areas for the last 2 weeks. The marina, and many east and north side areas, froze up first and stayed frozen. These areas will have the better ice. In the next few weeks they will be back up to 10 or 12 inches. The currently open areas MAY get to 5 inches, if snow gets on the new ice as its forming. The ice will not be as uniform as it was before we had some spots melt. I myself, will be hitting Indian hard this weekend and for the next few weeks. Ice up there is building and there are areas that still have close to a foot. If the cold holds for a 2 week period, and we don't get a bunch of snow, we can be on CJ past the first week of March. The walleye bite gets better the closer to March it gets....

The ice on the lake varies greatly. there are two open areas. One in front of the public beach and one north of the campground. I drilled and measured 6.5 inches in a large area today. The problem is there are 2 to 2.75 inch areas under just about anywhere you see snow. I fished for about an hour moving around 2 areas and found some crappies. If you don't pick your path very carefully and take all the precautions YOU WILL bust through. I have been drilling each day and measuring since Tuesday. I have seen the snow get blown around to different areas day to day. The docks have a lot of snow drifted against them and the ice underneath is much thinner. My suggestion is avoid ANY snow no matter how thin it looks. The ice is much different from last year having much more variation as its building.
