Went by over the weekend on my way back from Indiana; no one on the ice and very little evidence that anyone has been out.

I have not made it out to check this year, yet..
Have been fishing Michigan and Indiana as this lake takes a while to freeze due to depth.

Currently up here in the very NW corner(12 mile from Indiana and 18 mile from Michigan) most of the lakes have about 5-6" of ice(been fishing mainly Michigan and Indiana). Tomorrow's forecast is calling for 40 some degrees with 50's on Thursday and rain, >:( >:( >:( >:(

This weekend is calling for rain turning to sleet and ice followed by 8 or more inches of snow :o :o

This will make life interesting; trying to determine how much the ice is compromised before it is covered with all the snow ::) ::)

The ice may be sketchy next week and will required a smitty sled to get out in that much snow...

Tightlines.

Hey Guys, I'm Back ;D ;D ;D
New year and ready to go, so glad 2017 is over.
This is mainly for the Prostaff and my buddies on this site:  just a little overview of 2017
No pity of sympathy wanted, just reason I've been absent...
Right after the Expo we lost our ice up here, changed position at Lowes due to management and went back out on the floor(retail sucks): one weekend off a month, goofy schedules(8-5 one day, 10-7 the next, then 12-9. Missed all open water tournaments this summer. Had a bad bought of Vertigo for a month and half(missed a week's work)and couldn't get in my boat. Got son ready for 1st year of college and got 16 year old daughter ready for a year in Finland on Rotary Foreign exchange(passport, money raising, meetings, trip to New York to Finnish consulate for paperwork) Rotary doesn't pay for this , we did but a trip of a lifetime for her. September: my oldest living brother died unexpectedly(only 3 of us left out of 7) and I'm the executor of his estate with no will or trust.
Like I said, I'm glad that year is over :) :) :) :)

Look out now! I walked away from the retail business 2 weeks ago and starting a new job this week with an 8:30 - 5 schedule Monday - Friday ;D ;D ;D

I haven't entered this year's Online tournament yet, to give the rest of you a chance this year after last year when I think I was the only one with any Ice :o :o :o

Yes, I have been on the ice as of 12/16/17...

More posts to come.

Thanks and tightlines!!!

A little late....
NW Ohio farm pond.. 2" of ice. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!! While everyone else was waiting for ice 2 of us hit my honeyhole.  We both had on Striker Ice flotation suits, ice picks, throw ropes, spud bars and we went light on gear. NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!!!  Check your own ice, have all your safety gear and go with a buddy.

39 Gills in 4 hours(all between 8-1/2" and 10"). 2' off the bottom in 14' of water. Eurotackle Drop-X 5mm tungsten jig and Eurotackle Micro Finesse plastic Stonefly(looks like a wiggler) in brown.
Next day the ice was gone!!!

General Discussion / Is It OVER?
« on: February 02, 2017, 05:33:45 PM »
Looks like it might be over for this year in NW OHIO. Sunday my pond locked back up, but we had another warm spell and rain again, so I have open water around the edges again. High's in upper 30's coming this Sunday with 40"s and rain Monday.
Just not notification that the Midwest Open Ice tournament in Michigan has been postponed until 2018 and the Branch County, MI tournament series I have been fishing has also been put on hold indefinitely due to lack of safe ice. :( :( :( :(
Doesn't appear that any of the southern Michigan lakes have safe.

May have to start looking for a new boat to get ready for the spring panfish and bass tournaments... :) :) :) :)

Thanks,

7" of ice. Tricky getting on the ice due to the edges from last week's rain and warm temps. Edges had open water when we came off due to water receding and ice dropping. VERY Dangerous getting on and off the ice.

Fished in 25 FOW and fish on the bottom wouldn't bite but did find some to bite suspended at 15'.

Water very stained from rain. Caught a dozen crappie from 8-9" with White Eurotackle DROP-X 5mm tungsten jig and Micro Finesse plastics green Crazy Critter. Buddy caught 2 catfish on minnows and lost 2 at the hole. Another buddy had a catfish break off at the hole.  Very slow bite.

We all had spud bars, ice picks and throw ropes, plus I had on a flotation ice suit.

Remember:  NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!!!!

Check your own ice!!  Make sure you have all your safety equipment and go with a buddy.

With these warm temps and rain; ice can go south in a hurry.

Be Safe and Tight Lines..

On the ice again today in NW OHIO ;D ;D ;D ;D.  Nettle Lake. 7" of ice. A little tricky getting on at the edges due to all the rain and warm weather this week. Open water at the edges when we came off due to the water receding back to the creek and the ice dropping with the water level. The weather forecast for this week could make it a NO GO next weekend :( :(. Caught a dozen small crappie and buddy caught a couple of catfish. :)
