Soft Water Fishing Reports / Small lake walleye?
« on: July 13, 2014, 06:17:25 PM »
My 12' Jon boat is too small to take on the Great Erie, what are some good spots within an hour of Medina that have good walleye fishing? And what's good tactics, haven't don't real good with trolling spoons and harmesses

Cool thanks, I spend a lot of time down at the rapids, and find hundreds of snagged rigs, and the oranges, pinks and chartruse seem to be the most freak queenly uses. I'll give em a try

I have a home made gaft hook from a 10/0 treble hook screwed to a 2' section of a broken shovel handle, hung it up temporarly on the corner of the closet door by the point so the handly hung towards the ground, bumped the door and it fell off and sunk about 3/4's of an inch into my arm before stoping on the bone. Hurt like hell, I'm just glad I filed the barb off when I built it....

that sounds like it would be absolutely horrible! Those tiny jigging wrap hooks get my fingers every time!

Hahaha I'd rather hook the chub and catch a nice channel cat or walleye with it, but my curiosity got the best of me and I'd be more then happy to do it again, we have the same thing here on the west branch of the rocky, some of them are 12-14" too! and just for the record of things, when I was little i used to eat the live emerald shiners out of the bucket when we went perch fishing on Erie

a dozen 8" chubs, a nice home made cocktail sauce and a little lemon juice and this would be a fantastic snack in my opinion

I like to try new stuff, saw a video of a guy catching smelt though the ice and thought they would be good fried as people have told me.... Since smelt arent exactly abundent here, I got the next best thing,

One six inch or bigger creek chub, scales removed, gutted, and head and tail removed as well,
Rinsed off in cold water to get any slim off the skin, dip in egg-milk wash, coat in flour, drop in fryer, salt and pepper, good eating by my standards

I'm One of the seemingly few anglers that like to eat stocked trout, they aren't amazing by any means but they are quite edible none the less, here's where I would rate creek chub, from best to worst-

-yellow perch
-bluegill
-walleye
-crappie
-channel cat
-creek chub
-salmon
-largemouth bass
-stocked rainbow trout

Hahaha I like the way you think! 20' of water 12' down equals suspended crappies

Probably either a big walleye or one of the channel cats, I catch fish Ohio size channels all the time there in the summer

if we get another long winter like this I might be able to get on the ice a couple times after boot camp but then I'm out again to MCT
