General Discussion / Warmer weather coming
« on: February 28, 2015, 08:35:14 PM »
I think with this rain and warmer weather coming in the near future the bite should really fire up. The run off and melting should add oxygen, and with the spawn approaching the fish should be ready to really feed. Just make sure you're playing it safe, the ice is going to get a lot weaker. I always move closer to the spawning areas and mouths of coves this time of year, the fish should be starting to stage for the spawn. Another thing I will do is go a little larger with my lures, this time of year the fish seem to feed on larger stuff to get there calories for the up coming spawn. Anyone else do something different? Just trying to put some ideals out there for the beginner to think about, hopefully it will help someone put a couple more fish in the bucket.

I would have to bet smaller insects are hatching under the ice now and you are having to match the hatch. Just my 2 cents.

Buckeye lake / 2-27-15
« on: February 28, 2015, 08:08:45 AM »
Had a good day today, 20 crappie 11 to 12", 10 gills in the 9 to 10" range, 3 catfish, 2 throw back eyes, and 1 5lb eye. Fish were caught on a verity of lures and bait, but what I thought was out of the ordinary was the crappie, most were caught dead sticking a minnow 1 ft. under the ice. we weren't marking them but they were there, if you try it make sure your rod is secure, JiggnJunkie almost lost his rod a few times. The big eye came on a big gold jigging rap tipped with a minnow head. We were fishing in 6fow, water was pretty stained. Good luck and be safe.

Alum Creek / EYES!!!!! 2/26/15
« on: February 27, 2015, 05:33:55 AM »
Finally after a long search we finally found some eyes. Fished with Kernan, he lost 2 missed about 6 hits, I missed bout 5 hits but I finally caught an eye. John lost 1 that would go over 5lbs. It was a brutal walk in and out of the area we fished, not to mention the cold , snowy, windy conditions yesterday, but in the end all worth it. Got an 18 incher and a cat, both came in 24 fow but had hits in 46 fow and in 19 fow. All hits were on a blue/silver and Green/silver pimple with a subtitle action, one fella fishing near us was dead sticking pimples with 2 minnows and got 2 hits and loss a 3 pounder at the hole. Good luck and be safe.

It's hard for me to travel far when Alum Creek is 100 yards from my front door, but I have traveled to northern Wisc. to fish with a buddy of mine who lives there.

I have had some success in that area for gills in the past, usually the 5 to 7 ft. depth.

Alum Creek / Any reports?
« on: February 19, 2015, 03:27:14 PM »
I haven't been on the ice in a week, just wondering if anyone has been doing any good? I know mullygun got on a descent crappie bite, but has anyone else found anything? Not asking for your secret spot, just wondering if the bite has picked up. I have Friday thru Monday to fish but might just fish sat. and sun. I think weather wise those will be the best days. I have a couple more spots I want to try for eyes, and will post if I get on them, probably will have to stop by Kroger for some fish the way things have been going. Good luck and be safe.

Usually I fish for what ever will bite, but this year I have set a goal for myself to catch a 5lb plus eye threw the ice on Alum, until I do I'm that guy walking off the ice with nothing. I love the challenge, to me it's not how many fish I can catch, it's the chase I enjoy, and when I do catch one, and I will, the reward will be so great!

When the tanks start to freeze the fuel is pretty much gone anyways. I have thawed the tanks and put them back on just to get an additional 5 mins. not worth the effort if you ask me.

I recently stumbled into a good school on Alum. They were in a sandy area 36 plus fow, feeding on blood worms, when we laid them on the ice the puked hundreds up. If the lakes you fish have a beech, try fishing deep water in front of it.
