The bite here has been awful slowfor the last week. Made a trip to Iowa to introduce a young couple I know to hard water fishing, we went to brushy creek in north central Ia the ice was clear 12 - 15 inches thick, the water was so clear I could see the camera from the top of the hole in 12 fow but no fish moved to 22 fow and had a beautiful clear picture of amazing stucture and crappie perch gill and 1 huge northern. We fished for 8 hrs and landed 3 gills between us I threw everything I had at them , the bite was the same for everyone on the lake I talked to. going out late today to change our tactics and go after some eyes and sauger good luck to everyone be safe and Please teach a child to fish Dave

General Discussion / Sponsors
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:58:59 PM »
Ok gang heres the deal like most of you I have more lure jigs and fishing stuff than i need, but I am always looking for something new so I ordered Vibes last week after hearing everyone talk about them for the last year, the jig box is getting heavy, I did this not two hours before Dave announced they werent sponsoring the on line tourney this year. This brings me to my point we all seem to love this website so support our sponsors but most of all let them know you are supporting them because you found out about them on Ice Fish Ohio In my opinion that is the best way to keep them Thanks and enjoy your first weekend on the ice and above all take a kid with you. Dave

General Discussion / Added a new fish to my resume

I caught a fish yesterday that my buddy and I at first thought was a oddly marked rock bass. due to the cold 5 degrees I threw it back right away with no pics. The fish hit hard and had a lot of fight, it was smaller than the palm of my hand caught it on a lil cecil tipped with a waxie in 9 foot of water. If the boys had been with me they would have got their chart out to figure out what it was but not me I just played stupid until it got to eating at me last night so i got the chart out and went to the internet and figured out it was a Warmouth a member of the gill family with a large mouth. Goes to show there is always something for us to learn. Wish I had a pic for everyone if you google warmouth you can see one Dave

Inventions / Rod Protection
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:50:44 PM »
As many of you know I have two very active boys and am trying to cut down on replacing rod tips this year (I buy them by the gross it seems like) I saw some cheap cases by Nature Vision on Ebay for less than 3 bucks a piece you have to buy 12, so i tried it, may as well give the boys a hammer, they are not user friendly on a daily basis but would probably be ok for summer storage with care. You have to bend the rod to get it in and at that the line catches on the edge and breaks, I struggle trying to get the rods in and out let alone have the boys try it, back to the bucket, I did pick some cases up at Cabelas today that should help us survive the trip to Ohio at Xmas they were marked down from 29 dollars to 14.  What a difference a couple of days make cold weather finally made it we had 1 in of ice around the marina docks today but didnt mark a fish in 3 hrs. lows in the single digits starting Sunday the old surburban is loaded and changed the oil on all our reels what a great time of the year. Now the bad news 5-7 inches of snow tomorrow which is going to make for dangerous first ice, for all of you newcomers please note that the snow insulates the ice slowing the freezing process, so if you encounter these conditions be xtra careful. Bring on the ice but be safe ill keep you all posted Dave

PS told the missus id enter the rehab program in april LOL

Recipes / Grilled Venison Backstrap
« on: November 14, 2010, 07:00:33 PM »
Tried this tonight and it was the best venison i have had in a long time hope everyone enjoys
2 pounds venison backstrap (tenderloin), cut into 2 inch chunks
1 quart apple cider
1 1/2 pounds thick sliced bacon
2 (12 ounce) bottles barbecue sauce, your choice

Place chunks of venison into a shallow baking dish, and pour enough apple cider in to cover them. Cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours. Remove, and pat dry. Discard apple cider, and return venison to the dish. Pour barbeque sauce over the chunks, cover, and refrigerate for 2 to 3 more hours.

Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat. Charcoal is best, but if you must, use gas. Remove meat from the refrigerator, and let stand for 30 minutes, or until no longer chilled. Wrap each chunk of venison in a slice of bacon, and secure with toothpicks.

Brush the grill grate with olive oil when hot, and place venison pieces on the grill so they are not touching. The bacon will kick up some flames, so be ready. Grill, turning occasionally, until the bacon becomes slightly burnt, 15 to 20 minutes. The slower, the better. Dig in, and prepare to want more!

sorry to here about the slow day at alum Brett caught this jumbo on a floating jig and minnow on the Mississippi today for those who have taken kids fishing you ll love this story. We had just gotten to the river put the minnow in the water, Brett picked up a ten foot long stick got it tangled in the line fell down untangled the stick threw it aside turned around picked up his pole and landed this thing, all in a span of 3 minutes or less. That's why i love to take kids fishing you throw the book out and wing it, God life is good, hope everyone had as rewarding a day as I. Mrs. Ratherbe will love this fish story, God Bless and take a kid fishing  Dave

« on: October 20, 2010, 05:35:25 PM »
As many of you know from my posts one of my fishing buddies is having mobility issues so I have decided to try to make a walker with skis to make life easier on him. I want to have it so a bucket will mount somewhwere on it so any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated and please remember were all getting older so something like this might help extend our days on the ice. I know doug Stewart is very crafty so lets all put our heads together to come up with something Thanks for the help and as we anxiously await first ice teach a child to fish God Bless Dave

General Soft Water Discussions / Wisconsin Update
« on: September 06, 2010, 11:27:54 AM »
Greetings all Sorry i havent talked to you guys for a while been a busy summer kids are back in school and life has finally slowed down a bit. Fishing in the Mississippi has been tough at best this summer, over 30 inches of rain, rivers way up and it has taken a lot of imagination to catch much of anything. The boys have fished a couple tourneys that have had good turnouts without many fish caught. Prairie Du Chien had one in July Brett took 4th with a turnout of 52 kids. Lansing IA had 104 kids in August and each one took home something we are fortunate to have a long list of very gracious sponsors.
All of our bass this year have been in the 10 -12 inch range just cant find the big ones, alot of sheephead (drum) have been caught. The gills have been small for the most part got into some big ones a couple weeks ago off the boat but not very many. Took the kids to Brushy Creek near Webster City Ia 2 weeks ago and caught some nice gills and perch and one lonely crappie.
Cant wait for the ice to start should be out the end of November. Good luck to all and teach a child to fish Dave

« on: June 07, 2010, 09:40:24 AM »
Greetings all hope everyone is having a good start to the summer. Fishing in Wi has been great for a few of us a lot of others complaining. Caught 3 smallies last week in less than twenty minutes minnows seem to be the best even caught an eye with a bobber midday in less than 4 ft of water go figure. Russ ill take you up on your offer next time i come to town as i leave to go back north on Weds. I took the nieces and nephews to hoover Sunday night for a couple of hours got one hit but nothing landed everyone else seemed to be having the same luck will try again today and tomorrow, would love to see my nephew catch something. David it was good to here about your tourney sorry about the one that got away but i guess thats why we all keep coming back. Good luck fishing all be safe and teach a child to fish God Bless Dave

General Discussion / Whats working for you
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:09:17 AM »
As we get later into the season just wondering what everyone is using for jigs and bait. Weve had a lot of luck with rapala jigging raps all season. The panfish are still going for the bright jigs tipped with waxie or mousies. I have switched to a floating jig tipped with a minnow (Pink) and having a lot of luck with the sauger and walleye (caught 3 in half hour yesterday) The swedish pimple tipped with a minnow has worked well but not lately as successful Whats your story and teach a kid to fish
