General Discussion / Crappie size and catch limit?
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:25:37 PM »
I was at a local bait shop today and the owner told me that on March 1st there will be a new law that says crappie must be 9 inch's or more and you are limited to 30 per day. I'm going to do some research but I was wondering if anyone else ad heard this.

I guess i never thought about the aerator. Ive always had a small one that hung on the side but my 1st trip out this year I accidentally knocked over my bucket and watched it go right down my hole. Ive been meaning to replace it but I just havent got around to it. Thanks for the help.

Nimisila / Re: Ice Report

I fished from 9 am to 2 pm and between my dad and I we caught more fish then I wanted to count. We were back in the campground again today fishing in 8 ft. of water. The hot colors seem to be orange and chartruse. I stopped by the C-6 lot and the small bay has 5 inch's on it but at the mouth of the bay the ice drops to 1 inch real quick. Ill be meeting my dad up there around 8 am tomorrow if anyone wants to go out just let me know.

I made it to the Old State Park this evening from 5 pm until 8 pm. I only caught 1 crappie but it was 14 inch's. I was fishing at 6 ft in 10 ft of water. The ice was 6 inch's where I was at.

I have a shanty but I dont use it much so my bucket is right on the ice. I might get one of those and see how I like it. Thanks for the idea

Ive always used my standard minnow bucket( about 1 gallon, kinda clear with the yellow flip top). After an hour or two it starts to freeze up. It has never froze up to where i couldn't get my minnows. I was just wondering if they make a heater for them or if anyone has seen a bucket for ice fishing besides those Styrofoam ones.

Nimisila / Ice Report
« on: January 11, 2010, 01:51:18 PM »
Just got back from the lake. I fished in the bay back by the campground. The ice was 5 -7 inchs. I fished from 10 am until 1 pm and caught 35 bluegill with 26 of them being nice keepers. A few of them were some really nice redears. Also I drove by the C-6 lot/ launchramp and there was ice but I dont advise going out there as it was wide open water Tuesday last week. I will be going to Portage Lakes Old State Park this evening for crappie and back to Nimisila in the morning if anyone wants to go.

Went out yesterday to the Old State Park in the afternoon and we got about 20 bluegill. Most of them were 4 inch's and under but I did get 1 keeper. The ice was about 5 inch's. I'm going to be head to Nimisila in a few minutes then back to the OSP for crappie this evening if anyone want to meet up.

Bait and Tackle stores / Causeway bait shop on Mosquito

The Causeway is awsome. Not a single store around me had anything worth mentioning but when I got up there they had EVERYTHING. I highly recommend them. They even have a website  www.causewaysportinggoods.com

General Discussion / Re: How close is too close?
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:26:42 AM »
The same thing happened to me yesterday at the Old State Park on the Portage Lakes. I went to check my tip ups and a guy with 2 kids started drilling holes 5 feet away from where my shanty was. I was ticked of but I didnt say anything because i could tell it was there first trip ice fishing and I didnt want ruin it by making a big deal. The fish werent biting so i just moved. After i was done and packed up I went over to them and told them that there is plenty of lake and you dont have to get that close. If they want to fish that close they should ask. I dont mind having people fish with me but just be respectful. I also seen that they were catching 0 fish so I told them what they biting on and where there at. I didnt want to be an a hole but the kids need to learn respect so that the ice isnt nothing but a holes in future years.
