That's what I have been hearing as well. Thinking that place has been hit pretty hard in the summer and now it's drying up. Hope something happens because I used to love fishing there on the ice.
Thanks again for the conditions report, now I have to decide what I should hit from Ridgeville. Going to be on Erie again this week but taking a co-worker out who has never fished the hardwater before and wanted something closer to home.
Wondering what else to do, as this had always been my go to spot for inland.

I would be all for it but keep in mind that the lakes main purpose is navigation for commerce. Even though we put a check of a lot of money into through our taxes and licenses. Just can't see it happening.

I am partial to mustang. It's the only one that its PFD USCG certified. This is important to me since we are big Erie night bite guys and the USCG will allow this as your pfd if you are wearing it.
Then I use it for the ice as well

General Discussion / Re: Ice fishing trip?

I would use caution around Mouse. Very tricky ice up near there. I won't even venture there and fish all around the area. Bad current through that area and can cut the ice from underneath pretty bad. I know guys do it but you can walk a little further on safer ice near Catawba. JMO

Dale,
No doubt in safety in numbers. I may have taken the post differently so I will quote it here.."Follow the troops out at dawn on your ATV and that way you have help if needed." I take this as just tailpiping the line of fishermen heading out. Now, asking hey do you mind if we pair up or can we work together to pin some fish down and make a plan like that, no problem.
I may have taken it wrong but was getting the impression of the OP waiting for guys to head out and just follow from the ramp w/o discussion. Then if something happens someone is nearby. I think that is something best discussed with the group at the ramp before leaving. That's what I was saying and thanks for allowing me to clarify.

Kneedeep said it best in his post, common sense....
The lake was ripping with currents this past weekend and know guys who found some thin spots, esp. one south of green that others were fishing north of.
My advice is just don't follow someone out, learn the lake, what it does and check even if others made it through prior to you. Not saying be a trail blazer, I am saying be smart and check for yourself.
Guys don't appreciate tailpipers and you don't make many friends that way.
Seeing comments on here and other sites about taking 4 wheelers to the islands on the first time on erie ice, running to the islands for the first time visiting erie, one guys asked about taking a jeep wrangler out on erie now, that is just plain unsafe.
A guy went through and lost his quad of the cliffs this weekend when travelling a previously safe trail, however an airboat went through and broke the area. Luckily he made it.
In six days, it will be one year, since Jim Hudson, a well known guide in the Apostle Islands went through the ice and died. This ice we are on is less safe for the most part, then what they fish up there. Lets be careful and if you don't know or have to ask the question, then you should not be out on Erie, or if you want to learn hire a guide and tell him what you are looking to do.
I am not being a jerk but am really hoping everyone uses good judgement when heading out. No walleye is worth dying for!!

Correct...Dan got it. Funny part is my bro went to school with him so there was some talking between them Friday night while we were out. It was a good time and made for some fun on the ice to keep us going!!

Lake Erie / SBI long weekend report
« on: January 20, 2014, 09:30:09 PM »
Spent the long weekend on a PIB getaway for ice eyes. Went with a friend and my bro and flew over first light Friday. Fished S of rattlesnake from around 930am til about 545pm and we managed 4 eyes with some perch mixed in. Saturday we got a later start than we wanted due to activities Friday night! Pretty good current Saturday and at times was losing our lures on our screens. Managed 9 Saturday with many unders and perch and white bass mixed in. Sunday hit it from about 8 til 1100 with my buddy pulling one again with perch and WB mixed in.
My HB unit I picked up this year was awesome and saved us Friday night in a heavy snow squall in the dark and Sunday in blinding gale. Both times you could not make out land and it was reassuring knowing we are on our outward trail and heading right to the ramp, even though all three of us have grown up living, fishing and causing havoc in the islands.
Saturday there was a heck of a crack we hit coming in but it was all locked up and OK. We entered a local winter fun tourney Saturday and our biggest fish was 5.03 and the winner had just over 8 lbs for the single biggest winner take all event.
We were on ten inches all weekend and clarity was good. Had camera down Friday and had fun all day seeing all the different species.
All of our fish came on large pimples, slim fish or crocodile spoons mainly chartruese or green on them.
Ice travel was slowed a bit Sunday due to some drifting but was manageable. Ice is smooth so use caution or throw some cleats on!
Been working like a rented mule so even if we did not get a fish it was awesome to just hang and screw around and just laugh!!! It was just a good ole good time and had some good food with family and friends!!
Hope I covered the report side of it but if you are heading over this is what I know!
Monday we fished a private pond on the mainland for fun and now back to reality and work!
Get out and be safe!!

Heading over to the island first thing in the morning. IF able I will post a quick post of what I see on the flight over and what we encounter on the ice. From all indications ice in the island area (cant report for shore areas) is looking ok.
Not sure what time I will have as we have some setting up to do once we arrive. And honestly, this may be my only chance to hit it this hard this year on the island so the phone is going to be in the bag away from me! Will be back late monday, so sometime between now and then will get something up.
In the meantime, be smart, be safe and don't push it if in doubt.
