Ice has started in the Marina. So far the marina has been a baby factory. The big fish have yet to move in. Still getting some off brush from the bank with tiny minnows. Hopefully will have safe ice in a week.

felt like being on ice out there today. could only fish with my back to the wind for the most part. Nice crappies early size went down as the sun got further up. Crappie minnows outshined spikes this morning with green being the key color. fish were top to bottom following a large school of shad.

Had a blast fishing the dock tourney this morning even if the cold front shut fish down. Afterwards didn't want to go home so hit the creek for an hour. Bad weather doesn't effect the rivers like the lake it seems.  [/img]

After a long morning fishing the lower end of Buck creek for 5 eyes I went to check out the lake for ice. About 1/2 had skim ice and the marina was froze over. I couldn't kick a hole on the side of a dock so tomorrow I'll head back with an auger. Don't know if it will be walking safe or not but the docks should produce a few.

Have been catching some nice eyes in the Kyack areas of Snyder park. Jigs n minnow combo and minnow under bobber have been the ticket. Double 1/8oz with bannana scent glow bodies w/out tail and large minnow.

I've been hitting the dam and several brush piles the past couple of weeks both from boat and bank. Most of the keeper crappies I've caught have been in 12'18' range. Have caught a few big ones deeper but very few. Most in less than 12' seem to be small. Bobbers from shore have been best but working a second rod w/ jig n tube have taken it's share. Play with colors it's been changing. I like to start w/ white then go from there. From a boat you really want to double anchor so your sitting directly over your brush pile. Again bobber and minnow should be out but not the best method right now. Nothing beats an icespoon and small minnow worked over the boat. If anchored right you can use your ice-rods so your pre=tuned for the upcoming season. Drop the spoon to the bottom and pick up an inch. Jig this up a foot and let it drop back down for about five seconds. Then twitch it up and inch or two and stop. Wait at least 3 seconds and repeat. Those with flashers this is the time to use them. I'm already teasing fish up two feet of more before they take the bait. The reason I'm using minnows and not waxies or other is because just as the sun sets the eyes move through many of the areas and I've managed at least one or more every evening out.
And if your banking for eyes the dam still gives up some regularly. Years ago it was elbow to elbow almost like the Maumee. Now the numbers aren't there but the walleyes still feed there if your willing to work for them. Jig/twister(minus tail) and bass minnow is the way to go. Cast out and if your not in the rocks your not going to catch walleyes. Start casting and move if you haven't caught fish in ten casts. You'll hit a small school and they will move and so shoud you. I've walked and fishes the wholle way down the bank and didn't hit fish untill the last 200' but it was worth it. Some nights it's one fish and others have been twenty fish nights. Some nights I've been out til midnight and was worn out before the fish were. For those who don't have a boat or time to launch it the dam is your best bet through early December for catching eye at C.J.

couldn't sleep last night so I took a floating light to the docks and fished a couple of hours. Caught around twenty crappies only 7 were keepers. All were caught on a 3/4" Rapala jigging rap style bait in glow over 14' of water. Bite was sporadic no wave just on here then wait. Don't have my Vexilar so I don't know what was down there and never tried other baits. Didn't need tipping with spikes and hits were more dead weight than the tap I've been getting during daylight hours.

My horoscope said I was in one of my lucky times today. It didn't say good or bad I only assumed it was good. I headed over to Alum from Springfield to I could drill holes and look around with my Vexlar before the dock tourney. I've never fished the Marina there so I wanted to see what structure was in the area. I always have a fondness for the second dock from lakeside to start things so thats where I went. I went all the way out to work my way in. I drilled and put the Vexlar down turned it on and sat down to watch. I noticed the line on a rod was broken and got up to get it and fix the broken jigs. As I stood up my ice-cleats caught a dock tie-down and put me off balance and into the lake.
I always conside myself infallable and I wear a "S" on my chest. Sometimes it Superman and days like this Stupidman. I've fallen through before and going in didn't bother me, losing my flasher bothered me. "Any jump you walk away from is a good jump". Same goes for falling through the ice. Accidents happen but I broke two rules of mine. If your going a distance away from home to ice fish take extra clothes. I'd still be there fishing had I followed my own advice. But the second rule is a new one for me that I'll follow till the next time I decide to swim during winter.
GAS YOUR VEHICLE UP BEFORE YOU GO!!! I really don't get embarrassed but when I walked up to the gas station attendent with a twenty wearing only my Hanes briefs I thought the young lady was going to die of a heart attack or call the police about a pervert trying to enter the store. I can imagine the sight. I'm 6'3" bald covered in tattoos and sporting a foo manchu. But instead the girl was giggling uncontrollably even after I tried to explain. My wife never batted an eye when I asked her to bring clothes out to the truck when I got back. Oh well hope everyone else had a good day and I'll see everyone back on the ice.

Took a while to find them this morning but when we did hit larger gills and keeper crappies. The crappies still hit big baits for a while. There were less than a dozen anglers out there and the weather was less than pleasant. Can still walk between docks in spots, ice was 7" in most places I stepped onto. The ice-storm and frigid wind sent me home at 10:30 should of brought the one-man. Well Im off to Chicago then down to the Tenn-Alabama border. Don't know if I'll be back before the weekend but I'll post when I can as long as the dock ice permits.

Well I guess it's back to fishing the Marina. Walked out the boatramp around a 4' crack and there is still 6" of rotting ice. Didn't look good enough to sit on with the high winds so went to the marina. Caught 6 keeper crappies, several small ones, little gills and a couple of 5"perch. Only fished an hour. It's dock fishing using small #14 wire wrapped jigs and spikes.
Fish were right off bottom. Jiggled and held still. Took about 10-15 seconds before they'd bite. Well it's only mid Feb. and who knows what cold spells are left. Just remember any spot you caught fish from under the ice should have fish on softwater for several weeks. Also the Marina should have a good bite for several weeks to come. You may have to move and use electronics to find them but quality are caught every year in there after ice-out. Enjoyed the company I met through the this website and hope to see you all next year.

Well checked out the area between dam and beach. Slow. Caught 14 keepers crappies and another 8 on the roadbed. Walleye still showing up when they want to and don't seem to often but I have'nt done tip-ups or night fished in two weeks. Enjoyed the company this morning sorry we didn't get on another big school. Going out the campground beach tomorrow at 6am and go back where the schools of big fish have been roaming. Anyone's welcome as always. It's a mile hike so bear that in mind. With the warm weather coming we may be down to the last week or so. For anyone not wanting to go the distance there is still fish being caught on the roadbed north of the boatramp and 100-300 yards bearing left out of the marina. 12-17 has been best but have taken fish all the way to 25' If you don't know where the path to the beach is I should of given directions a while back. Blame the brain. From I-70. Get off on the Route 4 X63 go West (right from 70E and left from 70W. Go to 1st traffic light Bird rd. Go right or North. Take to deadend. This is the boatramp. (since ramp itself is closed you must go right or left. Go left for boatramp parking if your going to the roadbed. Go right for Marina and campground. Watch for sign if you want the marina the road is on your left. If your going to the campground just stay on the main drag. Watchout for the deer and turkeys they cross anytime all day. After you pass the entrance shack keep going. You'll pass a couple of roads going left but your looking for dumpsters surrounded by gray fencing with an open field behind. There will also be a road going right with a building and playground. Anyways behind the dumpster is the path going to the right that leads to the beach. When you get to the beach go right where the ice dam isn't 3-4 foot tall. You can go left and 1/4 out you'll find hmp that top at 5' and the southern side will go to 15' Go straight and you'll find a flat about 1/4 mile out in 12-15' of water. Head right toward north end of dam and you'll find humps, the old railroad tracks and the river channel. This requires at least a mile and more. Latly go straight out of the campground point down the bouy line which are still out there and you'll have 15-17' and mall bottom changes. alll these areas are producing and see alot less traffic.

I hear someone beat me to the point between the beach and dam. Had to work this week and never made it out. But tomorrow I'll make up for that. I'll be parking by the boat ramp actually instead of going right into ramp area go straight to parking between beach and ramp. I'll be there at 6am for anyone wanting to join me and walking down the beach. Have been imformed there has been brush dropped on the point that should be in 10-12' of water there. Also want to check the sand bar and the drops into deep water. There is a stump bed on the eat side of point worth checking out that should hold fish. Hopefully this may be where some eyes are holding, we'll see. Anyway everyone is welcome to join. Can't make promises on what will be caught but it seems the further you go for fish the better the bite is and like the humps soulth of the campground was this area is untapped. See you there.

Morning bite was good out on the humps in 13' but only lasted a few hours. After the bite died three of us split up and searched. Found them again on the deep railroad bed and limited on 9-10" crappies. Also caught 3 6-7" perch today. Crappies caught on Jigginshadraps, Vibe's and micro jigs w/spikes.

Morning was slow or else it took a while for us to locate where crappies moved to. Once we did the bite was on. VIBE's were the cats meow. Thanks to the members who went mid-lake with me. attached are picks of some of our fish. Had to leave while the bite was still on. Hate commitments to family on days like this but it happens.

I know it's early to talk wild mushrooms but if your like me you still have some dehydrated from last year. Bring these back by soaking a day in Whipping creme. At the same time pull some fillets out of the freeze and thaw in fridge. The next day the shrooms will be ready and the fillets should be 85% thawed. Take a bag or two of saltine crackers and crush to a gritty powder. Beat a few eggs and if you want spice add into the egg. I don't add a thing neither needs it. Get out a bowl of all purpose flour and dip fillets and shrooms in it. The flour give the egg something to stick to. No matter what you fry or batter you use this should always be your first step. Next dip the floured pieces into the egg and hold up till most drips off. Then last roll in the cracker crumbs. Now fry in pan or deepfryer. When they turn a light golden brown remove. The color of a bale of straw is perfect. They finish cooking after you pull them from the oil. Enjoy.
