The fish biologist at ODNR said they stock catfish every 3 yrs cause most either get eatn or die and their stocked at a size of 8 to 10in in length. the eyes and perch get stocked the way they do because of how long it takes to reach maturity and cost.

I think ur rite perch and walleye r a more important factor than catfish r. Im gonna try to talk to the dnr and c what they have to say and c if they can change the way their stock program is. I'll let u all know what I come up with.

Sorry for not puttn Mr.Wiskers on the ballot it totally slippd my mind. 2 yrs ago was the first time I caught a catfish through the ice. I tell u what that was a great dinner when I got home. My home town res is loaded. Time to start thinning down even though the DNR keeps stockn the place (bout every other or every third year) with them. Im not exactly sure their goal is , no one fifhes for them here

Heres a good one. Lets see which species is most popular among us icers.
Myself I prefer gills. Easy to target and can have alot on the ice in no time.

If u r unfamilular with a drink, try to hit it up multiple times a year in a boat and try to find thier pattern. Most of the times it works. Even though its cold in november or december, when u find them they will be there after first ice.
Also take a camera to find and pinpoint humps, reefs  dropoffs etc.

Willard Reservoir / Re: Ice Update?

To me its most definately worth the trip. Im only 40min to the east. If u watch my reports that will give u an idea of when is a good time to make the trip. Now... I do use my ice rod all year long there typically chartruce, green and gold ice jigs tippped with maggots most of the time. Its the way to go to fill ur freezer fast. soft craws work great 4 the gills as well as the perch.Or u can use slip bobber from the bank that works great to. jigs or a hook and split shot. No bigger than 4lb test is what I use.

Had a great time. ice was great. Between 9in and 11in thick. Caught ALOT of dink perch but did manage to bring some keepers to the table. 1.5 fish keep rate per hr total 18 keepers for the day. No pike but got to c some big red ears over 10.5in to 11.5in

I am a tru believer of vicious ice. great line. Ive caught from gills to 15 in bass to 20in  channel cats thru the ice with 2lb test. no problems yet. on soft water I use 4lb vicious on lite action rods against perch on lake erie and have caught some nice sheepheads( by accident) but still no line breakage, no probs. even smallies it holds up great with crankbaits .
