I didnt find a single scale on the 30 gills we did.
For $250 bucks you can sit and drink beer while the fish spin.
We let them spin for 20 mins all the scales end up in the bottom of the plastic tub. dump them out and rinse it off.

Spencer lake / 1/13/2014 evening bite
« on: January 12, 2014, 11:12:40 PM »
Made it out tonight for the evening bite. Things we slow until around 5:00. Picked up 30 chunky gills from 5:00-7:00. Had to sort through the small ones. Again 6fow produced the best. Caught everything on a glow green bobber fry from jamming jigs. Ice was 4-1/2 to 5" everywhere. Edges  were still solid. Saw one guy fall on the slick ice. Felt bad for him he fell so hard it sent a ripple through my holes. Ice will hold through tomorrow as long as we don't get a bunch of rain. All the water on top of the lake from Saturday tightened back up overnight and was good and hard today. If you make it out tomorrow be sure to have your cleats with you. The ice is slicker than snot on a door knob.

Got to try my buddies open country tumble drum fish scaler tonight. WOw does it do a great job. Threw 30 gills in there for 20 minutes pulled them out checked them, not one scale on any of them. Anyone who likes to scale their fish instead of skinning them absolutely needs to get one of these. Fished at Spencer today will post a report there.

Spencer lake / 1/11/2014. Nice to meet you
« on: January 11, 2014, 08:37:33 PM »
On the coldest day in 30 years Tuesday I got to fish most of the day with Deerslayern. It was great finally getting to meet him. Had a great day and took home a nice basket of Gills. Today I met Fishingoat at sunrise and spent the morning looking for a hot bite.  Also met joewallguy this morning as he was there also. Today was tougher fishing with a lot of sorting through gills and crappie. The morning bite was best for me and the evening bite wasn't bad either. Left with a good basket of crappie and chunky gills. Most of the fish were caught in 6fow on glow green or gold.  The ice was holding up good against the weather. the edges took most of the punishment. I have to say it is a wonderful feeling to finally have some IFOers in my area. Thanks for stopping to say hi and getting out on the ice.

I think that there will be more stories told about it in the man cave. But if it has become a matter of principle that it stays in the office I totally understand. Trust me the man cave(living room) is the only room I am allowed to decorate and it is filled with deer and fish.

I fully agree. They taste much better through the ice. I don't go targeting them but every now and then you need a table model. Besides It isn't anyones buisness what you keep as long as its legal. If its your buddy messin with ya, well ya kinda gotta take the ribbing. But if it isnt, Tell them to go sit on their bucket and mind their own business.

Started at the big stump. not much there. Moved to the south shore behind the stump. Had my best luck there in 6 fow. Ice was really growing. Should be a solid 6" by this evening.
I even went to the deep hole on the far south side. 5" there only caught a few small crappie there. Hope this helps.

Fished Spencer today with deerslayern. Ice was 5-6" and hard all the way from north to south on the south lake. it was cold and the fishing was slow. Although it beat being at work all day. Left with enough to clean for dinner. Caught mostly gills in 6fow on a jammin jig bobber fry in green. Hope to be out there Saturday if the weather holds.

Haven't checked Oberlin. I don't really fish it on ice. They usually draw it down in the winter. If the pump out after the ice is on it leaves an air gap between the water and ice.  I'm heading to Spencer on Tuesday it should be ready.

Checked Spencer on 1/4. Ice is sketchy at best. A few spots with 3" 20' out and most spots unable to get on the ice. 1" ice 2-3" slush. The few places that I could get on the ice it was around 3-4" of slush ice mix. Unfortunately these spots were not spots I would recommend fishing. Only 3 fow or less. Hopefully they are wrong about the snow and warm temps. Looks like we will see snow around 3 pm or so.
I am going to try to fish it on Tuesday. Bitter cold and wind included.
