Small Pond Reports / 12/18/2016

Hit the hardwater again this morning. A little slower than yesterday with post front conditions, blue skies and falling temps. Still in 12 fow but only 2' off bottom. White 5mm Kenders tungsten jig with Eurotackle micro finesse plastics. Took a friend out that hadn't been icefishing in years and showed him all the newest advancement and how to check ice on way out. He had a blast. Put a good rod and reel in his hands and showed him how to read the Vex. He was amazed and had never heard of using micro plastics for ice fishing. He took home about 20 nice gills and we released three bass. He's hooked and going to start looking for new gear and is ready to go again. Remember that NO ICE IS SAFE ICE. A great day when you can teach someone and get them hooked on ice fishing. :)

I was on a 10 acre pond this morning from 8 til 10. 5" of ice. JUST REMEMBER THAT NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!!!  Spudded my way out with ice picks around my neck and Striker Ice Hardwater flotation suit on. Fished in 12' of water, fish were 2 to 4' off bottom. 5mm white Kenders tungsten jig with Euro Tackle Natural colored MUMMY WORM and Micro Finesse plastics. FishStyx Custom Ice rod, Aqua Vu camera, Vexilar Flx 28. Caught 30 gills and kept 15, all 8 to 9.5" and released 1 bass. Awesome first day on the ice.

Sled Help / Smitty Sled
« on: December 11, 2016, 03:03:14 PM »
With Mother Nature intent on dumping a bunch of snow on top of the ice; decided to make a smitty sled to make it easier to drag my Clam Kenai Pro. Wants to snowplow in deeper snow. This should make it a lot easier. ;D

« on: December 04, 2016, 08:17:25 AM »
My contact at ODNR/La Sue Ann informed me this week that La Sue Ann Wildlife area will NOT be open to ICE FISHING this winter. They met their catch quota for the year during open water.
BUMMER!! Would have liked to get on it again.

General Discussion / Bye Bye ICE?

These recent warm temps are bad enough, but now it's raining in NW Ohio.  >:( >:( Thought I would make it out at least one more time on Saturday before the rain and almost 50 degrees on Sunday. :( :( Sure hoping it gets cold again in another week or this 2 week ice season will really stink! :o

Nettle lake / 1/24/16
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:50:32 PM »
Fished Nettle today from 7:30 am to 1 pm. Another tough bite day. :( Two of us started in 3 fow and moved out from there. Drilled close to 40 holes again today. Lots of lookers and sniffers but few takers. Jigs, plastics, spikes, wax worms, chubby darters, minnows, etc. They wouldn't touch a minnow or plastics. Fished from 3' out to 25'. Finally found them in 22', kept coming up to check bait and then leave. Dropped the AquaVu down and watched the crappie just cruising. ??? Did end up with one 10" crappie, 4" perch and a dozen dink gills. Beautiful day to be on the ice except for the bite. We were the only ones on the ice. ;D. Fish were on the bottom to suspended 5' off bottom. Wondering if the full moon last night had them feeding way late and way early.

Well, that's why they call it fishing and not catching.

Ice was 7-1/2".
