Recipes / fried creek chub
« on: February 23, 2014, 04:34:33 PM »
I like to try new stuff, saw a video of a guy catching smelt though the ice and thought they would be good fried as people have told me.... Since smelt arent exactly abundent here, I got the next best thing,

One six inch or bigger creek chub, scales removed, gutted, and head and tail removed as well,
Rinsed off in cold water to get any slim off the skin, dip in egg-milk wash, coat in flour, drop in fryer, salt and pepper, good eating by my standards

I'm One of the seemingly few anglers that like to eat stocked trout, they aren't amazing by any means but they are quite edible none the less, here's where I would rate creek chub, from best to worst-

-yellow perch
-bluegill
-walleye
-crappie
-channel cat
-creek chub
-salmon
-largemouth bass
-stocked rainbow trout

Medina Lake / I don't get this lake
« on: February 17, 2014, 10:54:15 PM »
I know there's lots of fish in there, I fish it almost daily when it's open water, and people I talk to always talk about catching them through the ice, I've been on it probably 12 times this season and have yet to get a fish, I've tried every size shape and color of spoon, jig, you name it, dry flies and nymphs pegged 12-18 inches above a jigging spoon, tipping maggots red&white, minnows, minnow heads, wax worms, even house flies (accidently left the maggots in the bucket for while and opened the jar to put them on a jig and they all turned to flies!)
I'm thinking it's a morning bite cause I've fished there from 12pm-9pm and haven't got a bit other then maybe a dozen little nips after dark

General Discussion / Last outing of the season
« on: February 17, 2014, 04:38:05 PM »
For my first year Ice fishing I learned a lot, met lots of cool people and made some new friends, unfortunately it seems due to school grades, I won't be on the ice for a while....

What I caught this season:

1 constantly empty wallet

6 stocked trout, which got boring after about the 4th one, but my buddy insisted we fish the metroparks constantly, cool I guess

3 largemouth nothing huge but atleast cool none the less

1 yellow sunfish (I don't even really count it cause it was in a tiny irrigation pond that is infested with them

Not the best season cause I was hoping to get a bunch of gills, crappie and maybe a pike or a couple walleye But oh we'll I had a lot of fun anyways

Fished Chippewa with futurestrader today, marked a ton of fish, multiple times where 2/3rds of the dial was completely lit up, didn't get any but they got some before I got on the ice, watch the mouth of the canal there's a huge buble and I went through first thing in the morning

General Discussion / Specific rod
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:33:44 AM »
arods while ago I was at the fin feather fur in berea, seen an extrordinarly short spinning ice rod (like maybe 15" tops" I wanna say it was around $9 and if memory serves me right, it was a light blue similar to the St. Croix Premiers And the tip section had a chartreuse and blaze orange checkering, a few bulky stainless guides with a cork handle, ugly looking rod, but for some reason I want it now, figures is ask on here before I call them tomorrow.

General Discussion / Limit confusion
« on: February 09, 2014, 06:50:19 PM »
On the ODNR site it lists the general state wide limits, bluegill and crappie arent on there, at the bottom it says

"all other species-
minimum size: none
daily limit: None

Does this mean you can keep whatever? Or does it mean you can't keep any? I've been wondering for years and figured I'd askhere

General Discussion / Terrible day on the ice
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:40:22 PM »
Hit Hubbard valley, hoped for some gills, but I still have yet to get one, chipped half the paint off one of my favorite jammin jigs (of course the only one that I can't find on their website anymore) drilled a bunch of holes only to find I'm on 14" of ice with 8" of water under it...and to top it off, while setting a tip up I dropped my only depth finder weight which bounced off the ice...and down the hole, It found the bottom alright...

hope my luck changes hahaha

General Discussion / Auger blade sharpening?
« on: February 06, 2014, 11:58:25 PM »
I guess y'all can go ahead an laugh, i have a Eskimo hand auger,...now that that's out of the way, I drilled some (actually probably more like alot) of dirty ice and my blades are pretty dull, I popped em off (talk about nerve wracking breaking the bolts loose)  and put them to the whetstone and sharpened fallowing the bevel like I sharpen my knives, not really confident I my ability to hone the edge perfect but I'll see how it cuts tomorrow. but further down the road, do you think if I took them to a knife sharpener that they woud do it? The Eskimo blades are flat with two bevel angles and a sleight curved relief at the center cut, so it would be a lot like sharpening a knife
