Inventions / Re: Icefishing shanty repair for material and sled.
« on: January 10, 2018, 12:56:37 PM »
I've kept a tube of that i my shoe shine kit for years to extend the life of a few pair of my shoes.  I got a small hole in my new shanty from an errant hook.  It worked. It doesn't seem to be a permanent fix but I always have some around so I'll just keep re-applying.

General Discussion / Re: How did your boots hold up?

I have a pair of Rocky boots with 800 grams of Thinsulate that I wear along with a heavy pair of wool socks and a heavy pair of cotton/poly socks.  (The Air Force tauught me to wear those wool socks.)  Anyways that with a 1/2" piece of foam that came with my AR-15 and my toes only got slightly cold.  I think the real trick is keeping your boots directly off the ice.

I bought my Mr Buddy a couple of years back.  Not only do I use it for Ice fishing but I also use it in the garage or let the wife use it for the cold soccer games.

Indian Lake / Re: Saturday 1/6

The best day ice fishing since we started 3 years ago.  We fished the North Fork area and we were throwing several different presentations catching gills and crappie.  Started around 9:00a and ended a little after 5:00p.  We ended up without about 10 keepers but threw back a bunch of dinks.

Nothing like the peace and tranquility of ice fishing being disrupted by snowmobiles blowing 20 feet by you.

Indian Lake / Re: Out of line ?

I live in the northwest Columbus area and I agree.  I did spend 15-20 minutes on the Google maps and the county auditors web site to scope out a few potential parking areas.  (If you use the map function of the website it's easy to search.) If you know the spot you want to hit you may find a few areas that are owned by the state and would be able park at to avoid any issues. The Indian Lake fishing map  is another map I referenced to get some idea as well. I'm staying away from private areas to avoid annoying any of the homeowners.

Alum Creek / Re: First fish of the year
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:04:49 AM »
We started ice fishing a couple of years ago but have only hit Indian Lake.  We haven't had much luck and I was thinking about trying Alum since we normally fish there in the the rest of the year.  Is the middle pool a better spot or do you need to go north?

I was too.  The spud bar would bust through with 1-2 hits.  I didn't get a chance to check the upper two pools.  I haven't ice fished on Alum I only have fished there in the summer so I'm not sure if other areas would freeze faster.  I normally head up to Indian for my ice fishing.

Alum Creek / Alum 2017/2018

I thought I would stop by at lunch so I can give an update.  I went into the marina area to check on the ice, the lower pool of Alum was mostly ice except for a few spots of water in the middle and around the docks which were mostly open.  The ice was clear but only about 1/2" thick or so in several spots. (This was on the north side of the marina where the kayaks put in next to the parking lot.)   The boat ramp was completely frozen but still only about 1/2" thick.

Thanks.  I thought they were a little overzealous on the prediction too but figured I couldn't get out there until the weekend anyways.  Looking forward to a good year after only being able to get out the one time before Christmas last year.  My gear is all laid out in the basement ready to go.

Anyone have any updates on the ice?  I was in the area on Christmas Eve and saw Long Island had mostly open water but there was still some ice on the north side.  I stopped by Lakeside to pick up a couple of things and they were thinking tomorrow may be safe ice.  Unfortunately with work and family I won't get there until Friday maybe Saturday.

My theory is the weight gain is a sociological issue.  For example, you're out with your pregnant wife and she gets one of her cravings and she wants you to stop at Dairy Queen.  Of course you're going to get yourself a large hot fudge sundae too.  This happens the entire 9 months.

I enjoyed the expo overall but when I go there around 11:30 on Saturday man was it a packed house. I was able to sit in on the Indian Lake seminar on Saturday afternoon.  Good program and I was able to get a couple of extra pointers.   Thanks for the work guys.
