C.J. Brown / Cj marina 1/13/18
« on: January 13, 2018, 05:44:17 PM »
Got stir crazy today and didn't want to make the drive to indian with the reports I'd heard so decide to go check the marina. Ran into a guy id fished with before he was doing the same thing. Spudded a few spots off the dock and it seemed like total crap. Spud went through after a couple hits or just broke off pieces of the ice. Decided to just fish from the docks. Drilling holes I realized there's a couple inches of frozen slush on top and then a few inches of so so ice underneath. A real pain to drill. Caught a few crappies but it was slow and a little chilly with no shanty. There was some guys that showed up and just walked right off the dock with no spud or test hole. They walked out and started fishing. All together and no safety equipment I could see. We warned them it wasn't great but they ignored us. It held them but... Anyway I guess it's fishable in areas but I'd use extreme caution if trying it.

Ok slab let's see you top this one. Lol. 14 3/4 inches. 1.89 lbs. Gorgeous fish. My biggest through the ice and one of my biggest ever. Gonna make a beautiful mount. And on my tiny little 18 in spring bobber rod, inline reel, 2 lb test and a 2.5 mm tungsten. It was awesome. I've caught bigger but I'm very happy about this one. I know I'm getting a little crazy with these entries but I've had a great season so far.

Indian Lake / North fork conditions/bite
« on: January 11, 2018, 08:02:20 AM »
Wondering if anyone got out last night or this morning? Heard the water muddied up pretty bad. Curious if it hurt the bite. Was gonna try it this afternoon but don't wanna make the drive if it's blown out.

Shade under 13 inches. Am I the only one fishing or does nobody else want to win free ice fishing gear?

Indian Lake / Indian mon 1/8
« on: January 08, 2018, 09:29:41 PM »
Decided to try crappie today. Got out around noon. Drilled a hole. Dropped the transducer in and had a loaded screen immediately. 11 inch crappie on the first drop. Tried not to get excited cause I've been there before and the fish evaporated. Not today. Hit a limit in about 2 hours. Nice grade of fish. Lots of 11+ and 4 between 12 1/2 and 13. Small tungsten with a plastic and a spike. Also got a perch. It was still early so I headed to north fork. Landed 4 keeper eyes and lost several more. Should have had a limit and then some. Couldn't seem to keep the hook in em today. But it was an awesome day on the ice.

Ice Safety!!! / Effects of snow on ice?
« on: December 31, 2017, 07:17:03 PM »
Ok I feel like I should know this but what exactly does the snow on top of ice do to the ice? I thought it would just keep more ice from forming as fast. Fished a buddy's pond tonight. He checked it a couple days ago and said he had 4.5 inches. Being alone and ever cautious I spudded my way out. 3 hits and went through. I drilled a hole and checked thickness. Maybe 3.5. Still fishable but not what I was expecting. And even with temps in the low teens the snow seemed wet down near the ice. But that could have just been from my holes welling up too I guess. I've only been ice fishing a few years and this is the first time I've seen these conditions I think. So will snow on top actually make you lose ice or did he maybe just not get a good measurement? Ice was pretty uniform thickness in all the places I checked.

17 inch largemouth. Private pond. Caught on a small tungsten and a pink plastic tipped with a spike. 3 lb test. I could not get him to keep his mouth all the way closed for the pic tho. Lol. Think he was flash freezing. Chilly out there today.

Rocky Fork / Docks are HOT!
« on: December 17, 2017, 07:22:45 PM »
After a cold windy unsuccessful morning of hunting I headed to the docks at rocky yesterday. Got there about 11 and got on the crappie right away. Caught em all afternoon and hit my limit about 4 o'clock. Went back this morning with a buddy who wanted to try fishing with ice gear. It was on again! I had my 30 by 11 or so. We stayed and fished until 1 letting my buddy get some practice with the fish finder etc and try to get himself a few more. We ended with 47. Lots of 10+ with several at or near 12 inches. Best 2 days I've had off the docks there. Sure beats alum...

Soft Water Fishing Reports / Hellooooo? It's so quiet!
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:59:58 PM »
Ok if no one else is gonna post I'll make sure the site still works at least. Lol. Haven't been fishing much due to work and heat but I took the first day I've had off work in a month and hauled the boat down to caesars creek Sunday morning. Beautiful morning. Was on the water at the crack of dawn and started throwing topwater. No action so I started pitching a creature bait. Within 5 min I felt a hit and set the hook on a small musky maybe 22 inches. 5 min later landed a 3.5lb largemouth. The whole day went like that. By 930 I had landed 13 bass and that musky. Couple on the creature bait but ended up getting them on topwater, wacky rigged senkos, and a drop shot too. Awesome morning on the water but as the sun got higher and the pleasure boaters showed up the bite shut down. Was off the water by 11. Was great to get out and catch some fish.
Now let's see if anyone else even checks this site during the summer

Product and Tackle Reviews / Frabill I2 ice suit
« on: February 02, 2017, 06:49:56 PM »
Got a great deal on a frabill i2 ice suit. It came today. Seems to be of decent quality. Should be warm enough for me but not so thick I'll sweat to death walking around. Extra padding in the butt and knees. Comes with a set of ice picks and has little holsters to hold them around your neck. The jacket is just what I wanted. Only complaint I have so far with the bibs is that the zipper on the front only comes down to my stomach and has a solid piece of fabric behind it. How you supposed to take a leak? Lol.
Looks like I will have to wait until next year to try it on the ice but so far I'm pretty happy with it. Especially since I got it for 90 bucks on an e bay auction. I had put off buying a suit due to the cost of most of them. Even my wife didn't complain when I bought this one.

General Discussion / The good thing about a crappy ice season
« on: January 31, 2017, 05:31:02 PM »
Well I've found a plus side to the warmer than average winter. You can get some good deals on ice gear. Just picked up a frabill ice suit and a bro series rod for a hundred bucks and change on ebay. Plus cabelas has most of their ice stuff 20% off on their website. Seems like everyone is trying to unload their inventory.  At least I'm paying less for the gear I barely get to use. Lol

Grand Lake St. Marys / 1/22/17
« on: January 23, 2017, 06:43:57 AM »
Made the trip up to st marys yesterday. Started at the marina and caught a few crappie but it slowed down and I went searching about 1030. Found a brush pile in another channel that was pretty loaded. Ended up with a limit by 1. Fish were right in the brush and most were within 8 ft of the bank. 2-3 ft deep. Black/chartreuse stinger caught most. Few on a sexy tail shad in Tennessee shad color. Was a beautiful day to get out and using the long rods was a nice change of pace.

Indian Lake / Ice is done!
« on: January 11, 2017, 05:55:47 PM »
Was out today. Ice was good this morning but deteriorated rapidly. Was cracking with every step. I pushed it as long as I cared to trying to get one more for my limit. I can't speak for anywhere else on the lake but IMO North Fork is unsafe to be on. From what I saw out there today nowhere on the lake is worth trying. Most nervous I've ever been on the ice.  :o
