Indian Lake / Re: Indian Lake conditions
« on: February 16, 2021, 07:49:53 PM »
Ryan, who is one of our administrators, is doing some exhibitions on ice safety, etc and a tournament on Sat.  They will be at Blackhawk on Saturday morning. There should be several IFO guys around and they would be more than happy to give you some tips and point you in the right direction. I would definitely leave any unnecessary gear at home. Gonna be tough walking with this snow. I'm not sure if I'll make it up there before then or not, as i also live over an hour away,  but if I get out I will post ice/ fishing report. Stay safe out there.

Indian Lake / Re: 2-14-2021 Report

I've been on Indian almost every day for the past week and a half. While the saugeye bite has been less than spectacular, I've pulled at least a couple keepers almost every day, mixed in with a ton of shorts. Think I've only caught 1 limit.  Most have come on  small jigging raps. Caught fish on med size rattle spoons and a few on vibes also.
The panfish bite has been really good tho. Got limits of crappie Thurs and Sat and kept  27 Fri fishing a few hours after work. Some very nice fish too. I've caught 7 over 14 inches with the biggest going 15 1/8. Bunch of really nice gills mixed in also. The schools of crappie have been in really tight little groups. I'm not kidding when I say that you can be ten feet away from them and barely get a bite, move a little and knock 15 out of one hole. I've prob drilled 200+ holes this week trying to stay on them. Almost every fish has come on a small tungsten with a tiny pink tail and a spike. I have caught a lot right on the edge of the pads, but at times they've been right up in them.  Or out in front. I just keep drilling till I land on them. And I'm not fishing some secret spot. Been dozens of people around me every day. Good luck guys. Hopefully this snow isn't going to screw things up.

Indian Lake / Indian this weekend
« on: February 09, 2021, 06:01:57 AM »
Took off work early on Fri and headed to the lake. Fri night got 2 keeper saugeye and prob a dozen shorts. Sat 3 keepers and a dozen shorts. Fished somewhere else Sunday. Monday finally got into em. Had 3 keeper saugeye and a 14 inch crappie when the bite shut down, so I went hunting for panfish. Drilled a ton of holes. Picked at em all afternoon until about 330 when I finally found a group of nice gills and crappie. Also managed to pull my last 3 eyes.  Ended up with  6 eyes, 12 crappie, and 19 gills.  Felt great to be out running around on the ice for a few days. Been awhile. Back to work today but hopefully I'll get an evening or 2 in this week...
Ice was 6 or 7 inches most places I fished. Still some slushy crap on top that I think is impeding ice from building as fast as it should be. Be safe out there.

Product and Tackle Reviews / Re: cordless drill auger adapter
« on: February 03, 2021, 01:19:13 PM »
I recently set up my 8 inch laser auger with a clam drill plate and a dewalt cordless hammer drill. Put in a 6 amp 20/60v flexvolt battery. I drilled holes all day thru 8-10 inches up in Michigan running and gunning for perch in less than 20 degree weather without keeping the battery warm.   No problems at all and at the end of the day it hadn't even come off of the third bar on the charge! Would be a bit pricey to buy that setup, but lucky for me I have all the dewalt stuff I'd ever want sitting around at work.

Indian Lake / Re: Ice conditions?
« on: February 03, 2021, 09:14:49 AM »
I actually went up and checked it out yesterday afternoon. Didn't look great. There were a few guys out at blackhawk and taco Bell but looks like most were staying home. there was a ton of slush and water on top of the ice and I didn't feel comfortable going out alone. Guess someone went thru at first pull off on LI on Monday. Should harden back up the next few days

Indian Lake / Ice conditions?
« on: February 01, 2021, 05:29:04 PM »
Has anyone checked conditions at Indian since the storm?  I fished Saturday for the first time on ice in Ohio in 2 years. Hope to get back out this week if the ice is holding up. Any current info would be appreciated. Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Falling Through the ice
« on: January 30, 2021, 09:08:36 PM »
Well, I stayed dry today but someone else at Indian wasn't so fortunate. I'd feel sorry for him if I wasn't still so stunned by his actions. This guy walks out into the ice with his buddy. His buddy has a spud bar but is walking behind him. Mistake number 1. Then he proceeds to attempt to just stroll across a pressure crack where old ice in a cut meets newer ice on the main body of water.  Mistake number 2 and he went right thru. I'm not sure how anyone with any ice experience could think that was a good idea. If anyone doesn't know, if you see a spot where the ice is buckled up and has water sitting on top of otherwise dry ice, DON'T WALK ON IT!  I'm glad the guy got out ok and all, but he's got no one to blame but himself.  Lots of people out today with no safety gear visible. People don't seem to understand these are not ideal ice conditions, and safe ice should definitely not be assumed just because you see people on it. Stay safe out there. This snow isn't going to help things...

I love to fish for walleye, saugeye, and perch or really anything else thru the ice. But my favorite would prob be chasing crappie on Indian lake. You get on the right spot on the right day and it can be absolutely phenomenal. Indian has some of the best quality fish around.  12+ inch fish weighing over a pound are pretty common and i caught one almost 2 pounds a few years ago. Limits that barely fit in a 5 gallon bucket... lots of fun on my 18 inch clam spring bobber rod with an inline reel, 2 lb test, and a small tungsten with a plastic tail tipped with a spike. Now if it will just fu*#%" freeze!
