Sled Help / Strikemaster Glide-lite Utilty Sled...
« on: January 01, 2018, 05:51:05 AM »
All,

I’m thinking about getting a Strikemadter Glide Lite sled (pic attached below). There will be days when I don’t need a shanty and only need to carry the bare minimum of gear. I think this is a good option.

Does anyone use one? What are your experiences? Also, does anyone else make them?

Thanks in advance...

Ice Safety!!! / Wind Chill Advisory 12/31/2017...
« on: December 31, 2017, 08:58:29 PM »
All,

We talk a lot about ice safety i.e whether it’s safe to go on the ice. Rarely have I seen discussion on other hazards associated with being outdoors. You should all be aware of the wind chill advisory in force for the next 38hrs....

...WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON EST TUESDAY...

* WHAT...Very cold wind chills expected. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. The wind chill will range from 10 below zero to 20 below zero, except Monday night into Tuesday morning when the wind chill will be colder than 20 below zero.

* WHERE...Portions of East Central Indiana and Central and West Central Ohio.

* WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to noon EST Tuesday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frost bite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken.

Check your local weather for more details...

Since hyperthermia will occur after 15mins in the water at this time of year, the wind chill hazard, described above, is very significant.

Stay safe!

Indian Lake / Indian Lake 12/31.....
« on: December 31, 2017, 03:57:51 PM »
Fished North Fork from 8am - 3pm, 6” of ice over 9.7ft of water. I parked at 2nd pull off. When I got out there was 5ish folks fishing, when I left there was 15ish. David and Josh came later in the morning. Folks were coming and going all morning. I marked a bunch of fish but couldn’t get them to bite. I did lose one at the hole though. Irrespective, it was a good first time out.....

Indian Lake / Indian Lake 12/29...
« on: December 29, 2017, 08:13:45 AM »
Hi All,

Back from a visit to the UK for Christmas. Drove to Long Island at day break and there were a couple of people out but not as many as I expected. Folks were fishing over by O’Connors so it looks like the ice is thick enough to walk out from the Car Park at Long Island.

I’m not planning on going out until after New Year - I’ll keep everyone posted as I drive around the lake from time-to-time...

All,

I’m out of town until the 28th so, I wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I’m hoping that when I get back Indian Lake will be a sheet of 4” ice so I can finish out the year with a Bang!

Anyway, I wanted to wish you all the best!

General Discussion / Did this happen last year?

All,

I seem to recall that we had a teaser just before Christmas last year. Lakes freezing up and promising conditions in late December....is this right?

Indian Lake / First Ice on Indian Lake (2017/2018)
« on: December 09, 2017, 08:07:13 AM »
All,

Attached are a couple of pics taken from my back deck at 7:45 this morning. Icing happened over night as we had soft water up until going to bed. It's getting close!

I'll update with progress this week (since I now live 50' from the lake). If the weather stays like this I may be able to drill a hole later in the week.

Alum Creek Dock Tournaments / Saturday rocked!
« on: November 05, 2017, 10:24:52 PM »
All,

it was so great seeing everyone on Saturday! First Alums dock tourney in two years! The new docks are much more stable than the old ones, the ramps are better than the old stairs (although they could be dodgy in wet/icy weather), I saw folks walking around with saugeyes on stringers (that's good for Alum docks - right?). IMHO it rocked!

Hi Guys,

Had to share this! So, the health scare I had early this year got me thinking "why wait for retirement to do something I can do now?" The result is our new home on Sassafras Point, Indian Lake! I'm in the process of some reno's and then we'll be fully moved in.

Pics attached below....

Recipes / Easy Fish Stew With Mediterranean Flavors
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:16:08 PM »
Tried this one tonight - crazy good!

Ingredients

4 large garlic cloves, cut in half, green shoots removed
4 anchovy fillets, soaked in water for 4 minutes, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion, chopped - I used the cans with oregano in them
1 celery rib, chopped
1 medium carrot, chopped
Salt, preferably kosher salt, to taste
1 (28-ounce) can chopped tomatoes, with liquid
1 quart water and 1/2 cup of white wine
1 pound small new potatoes, scrubbed and quartered or sliced
A bouquet garni made with a bay leaf (sage, thyme, rosemary, bag leaf)
 Freshly ground pepper
1 to 1 ½ pounds walley cut in 1-2-inch pieces

Prep

Place the garlic cloves and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a mortar and pestle, and mash to a paste. Add the anchovy fillets and mash with the garlic. Set aside.

Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large, heavy soup pot or Dutch oven, and add the onion, celery and carrot with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring, until the onion is tender, about five minutes. Add the pureed garlic and anchovy. Cook, stirring, until the mixture is very fragrant, about one minute, and then add the tomatoes. Cook, stirring often, until the tomatoes have cooked down a bit and the mixture smells aromatic, about 10 to 15 minutes. Add the water, white wine, potatoes, salt (to taste) and the bouquet garni. Bring to a simmer. Turn the heat to low, cover partially and simmer 30 minutes. Taste, adjust salt and add pepper to taste. Remove the bouquet garni.

Season the fish with salt and pepper, and stir into the soup. The soup should not be boiling. Simmer five to 10 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fillets) or just until it flakes easily when poked. Remove from the heat, stir in the parsley, taste once more, adjust seasonings and serve.

Yum!
