Lake Erie / Erie Walleye during the Summer....
« on: June 27, 2016, 05:24:24 PM »
Hi All,

Looking for some advice on Erie Walley during the Summer - here's what I've heard/experienced:

Spring to July is good fishing in the Eastern Basin
In July the fishing tends to turn off.
Fishing then picks up in the Western Basin?

I heard recently that walleye turn on again in the Eastern Basin - is this true? Since the IFO trip for the spring jig I've been out a few times and I'm now wondering whether I should head West at the end of July?

Thanks in advance....

Small Pond Reports / 1st Bass of the Season....
« on: March 28, 2016, 08:15:30 AM »
Caught my 1st bass (4lb) of the season on Saturday at my local pond in Powell, OH. The water was muddy so I used dark blue soft plastic worms and a dark blue chatter bait. The bass are slowly starting to move up to the sides of the pond. Hopefully I'll get out after work a few times this week.....get some practice in for the bigger lakes...

« on: February 21, 2016, 09:46:28 PM »
Tried this one tonight....very good:

http://steamykitchen.com/14700-indian-fish-coconut-curry.html

Used perch cut into 3/4" strips
Soaked the perch in milk for an hour before adding
Only one green chili and took it out after 5 mins
Made the curry sauce and put the perch in 5mins before eating.

Delicious fish curry....got the wife's seal of approval too.....we'll be having it again!

General Discussion / S.S Minnow...
« on: February 16, 2016, 08:54:42 PM »
So as my tag says I'm a total newbie (2nd season) and have loved every experience so far. The experience below is not so high on the list....but funny enough to share - here goes:

A couple of weeks ago (Jan 30th - the day Buckeye Lake melted around us) I was able to go out on the lake to fish. This was the 2nd time out on a big boy lake so the excitement level was up there. On the Friday night I bought 4doz minnows from Cheshire Rd Market on the way home from work and had to buy another polystyrene bucket to put them in (I have a collection of them now - need to remember minnows need buckets). Anyway, got home, did the usual Friday night thang.....didn't sleep much due to excitement level and was up early on Saturday. I loaded the truck and put the minnows (that I'd checked numerous times and had taped an aerator to the bucket the night before) in the crew cab. Right, here we go, king-ding-a-jig, off to slabslay, put 30inthabucket etc....The roundabout 10mins away from the house had something different to say!

As I went around the roundabout (negative camber) I heard SPLOSH!....."Oh crap!" thought Andy "The minnow bucket has fallen over!".....I pulled over a little way down the road and my fear was discovered to be true. I opened the back door and minnows fell out on the road. I looked in the back and they were wriggling everywhere. I quickly put on my new head light and started to put the minnows back into the bucket. I picked them up off the road, off the carpet, felt under the back seats, under the front seats, and found them all over the place. Now we have to remember, it's 5:00am, I'm in surburban Powell, OH, I'm in my ice suit, have picks around my neck and a head light on. If the cops would have seen me I would have been arrested me just for being weird! It wouldn't be your usual stop! Anyway, I got most of the minnows back in the bucket and then realized they were swimming in 1" of water...."Hmmm these aren't going to last long." I thought. "Water, they need water" I said to myself. Looking around for water. I then realized I was next to O'Shaunessy reservoir. "Great! Water!" I drove down to the boat ramp and then realized "Oh crap! it's frozen!" Duh! The whole reason I was on the road at 5:00am was to go ice fishing. Anyway ended back at the house filling the bucket from the outside faucet....

The days fishing was good, on the lake for sunrise, got to fish with David, Rusty, Steve, Josh etc, caught a few...a good day...

My truck stiiinks so bad now. The stink ranges from an abandoned fish cleaning house on a warm day to mild stinky fish cat food on a cold day. I've emptied at least 2 cans of Lysol into the cab since the event. Last Sunday I did a close inspection and found 2 rotten minnows in there but still the stink continues....who knows when it will go away?

So what about S.S Minnow? So I went out dock fishing during the thaw and the missus had taped an SS Minnow sign to the steering wheel.....no sympathy there...

Anyway, hopefully the stinky fish smell will go away soon...I'm currently looking for ways to stop a minnows spill ever happening again...

General Discussion / We did it our way....
« on: February 15, 2016, 08:53:07 PM »
And now, the end is here;
And so we faced the final ice day,
My friends, I'll say it clear,
I'll state the case, of which there's no ice left.

We've fished, a season dull,
We've traveled each and every lake - hey!;
And more, much more than this,
We did it our way.

Regrets, we've had a few;
But then again, El Niņo is not to mention
We did what we had to do,
And got on the ice without exemption.

We planned and marked the catch;
Each careful step along the ice way,
And more, much more than this,
We did it our way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When they bit off more than they could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
They ate it up and spat it out.
We faced it all and we stood tall;
And did it our way.

We've fished, we've  laughed and cried.
We've had our fill; our share of losing.
And now, as ice subsides,
We find it not at all amusing.

To think we didn't fish all that;
And may we say - not in a shy way,
"Oh no, oh no not us,
We fished it our way.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not the ice, then we have naught.
To fish the holes, we truly feel,
And not the type of ice that truly yields,
The record shows we took the blows -
And did it our way!

Yes, it was our way.

Indian Lake / Fishing Report 2/14
« on: February 14, 2016, 04:00:03 PM »
Fished Indian (Long Island - Parked at 1st pull-off on SR-273) for 4-1/2hrs (10am-2:30pm). Ice was 5" thick, fished in 4 FOW, ambient temperature was 16F with light winds. Caught 10 gills on light jigs (that Bruce kindly gave me) tipped with waxies or red spikes and a Frabill Black Ops palm rod. Bought the bait at Mike's bait and tackle. The gills were nothing spectacular sizewize but the bite was steady. Overall a good day, first time out on Indian and first time using the Eskimo Wide 1 Inferno.

Hi All,

What are the chances of ice this weekend? We are seeing low temperatures for the rest of the week. Do you think Sunday/Monday we'll have ice?

Alum Creek Dock Tournaments / 2/6 - The Mud Puppy Kid...
« on: February 06, 2016, 03:00:27 PM »
Fishing was very slow at Alum Creek this morning. the docks had skim ice that slowly melted while we were there. All I managed was 2 damn mud puppies. Marked a lot of bait fish, some subtle bites but no target species. It was good to see folks again though...
