Inventions / Ice Thickness Detector
« on: November 19, 2019, 08:17:38 PM »
I have a LX-i digital Sonar hand held depth finder made by Mar-Cum Tech. that measures the depth of the water without drilling a hole in the ice but it does not measure the ice thickness. We need something shaped like a metal detector (for easy measuring) that reads the ice thickness or an instrument that measures both water depth and ice thickness. The depth finders are based on Sonar signals reflected back from the bottom.I am looking for an instrument based on Ultrasound technology where the reading is based on density change (ice to water).  A spud bar is always the safe way to go but this device, if made or could be made, would be benefical for ice fishermen. Any ideas, comments, or suggestions ? Thanks !

The Indian Lake area is forecasted for next week -Nov 11-17- as avg temp of 28.3 with lows avg temps of 21.6. Should help with the water temps. however, if you base safe ice formation on 10 consecutive days below freezing and really believe long term predictions that are highly questionable on accuracy, we could be ice fishing on Jan. 20,2020. We can always hope. Remember, no ice is ever safe! Be careful!

Slab, sorry to see you are under the weather. I'm in the same boat but for different reasons. It's no fun! When your knee improves and work slows down, I'm sure you will get your Wilcraft back out even if it is next season.Have patience and thanks for all your posts and reports all year.Good Luck!

General Discussion / Re: Indian lake parking
« on: February 05, 2019, 08:29:57 PM »
Just wondering? About the problem with parking at Long Island-North Fork  area -by the bridge. We have all had this problem and beaten it to death! But what is the problem? THE LAND IS PRIVATE! It could/should be public. What if? The ODNR,state, county or whoever bought the property- both sides of the road- and made it a public access area for the lake. Make it a public parking lot with maybe a small boat launch site.ADVANTAGES- For ice fishing- no need to park on edge of the road-no tickets due to snow removal regulations and no tickets or tows due to illegal parking on private land. I don't know why the residence owners would not be willing to sell.(No more tow truck calling and other problems they have to put up with) Could be a solution for us ice guys! On 29 Jan 2016, I spoke with the game warden of Logan county-Adam Smith. We spoke very briefly about this while he was parked in the area on duty doing his job.No conclusions reached! He mentioned the idea during our conversation. How do we get this going? What steps need to taken for this solution? Someone who may have contacts with appropriate people could step up and investigate. Thoughts anyone? As always, clean up your area when finished ice fishing and take your crap with you!

Wilcraft must be nice. But for those of us who ice fish, can't afford one and hate dragging your sled with all the gear, try a SMITTY SLED. Just strap your sled/shelter onto the SMITTY SLED and go! Works great especially with snow on the ice.Make your own-GOOGLE SMITTY SLED!

Welcome to IceFishOhio / Rescued from the FOG
« on: March 06, 2018, 12:18:32 PM »
My name is Ken.  I was rescued from the ice on Indian Lake Feb 14, 2018.  I sincerely thank, as I did that night, all who participated in my rescue.  The fire department, EMS dispatch and Mike R. of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.  I express personal thanks to the Bellefontsine Sheriff's Office and crew especially dispatcher Amy K. for her professional effort in initiating, organizing and directing my rescue.
After reading several reports and opinions on the internet, I feel it necessary to respond.  Many erroneous assumptions, incorrect information and misconceptions were drawn to necessitate my rescue.
I parked at the 2nd pull off on Long Island  Dr.  Fished the NW side. 5 1//2in of ice.  Totally safe!  Drizzling rain and FOG rolled in at 5:30pm.  Decided to quit, packed up the ice shelter and leave.  The FOG increased very quickly every minute.  Extremely thick!  Darkness sent in fast and my flashlight was no help.  I couldn't find my exit.  Saw a shallow area that looked familiar.  Stayed close to land.  The ice broke and I went in just above my boots.  Got out with no problem.  Had only a few feet of visibility due to the FOG!  Obviously not the 2nd pull off exit.  Continued searching, compass no help.  I didn't know which direction to try next. However I was safe on top of the ice, not in the water and not nearly close to dying.  Called 911 at 7:30pm  I was simply LOST IN THE FOG!!
Again thanks to all involved however I needed to clarify the real reason necessary for the rescue.  Not falling through the ice or using unsafe ice fishing practices but only the lack of visibility due to the extremely heavy FOG.
Weather permitting, I will be back year.
