im thinking about buying one for fishing but never owned one any input would be great good or bad thanks.

i have a garmin e-trex that i thought i would use for fishing, but i seldom use it because the lakes i fish are small. if you go to erie or some other big lake, you need one. went to hubbard lake michigan a few years ago. 10 miles long, 4 miles wide. it started to get dark and we weren't ready to quit, so i just watched which direction everyone else went to get off. drove around for 45 minutes and couldn't find the ramp. i was starting to get kinda nervous. had to go to a house and ask for directions to the ramp. ended up on the wrong side of the lake.  :-[ always used the gps after that.

I have a delorme pn-40. I love that GPS. No matter how big or small the area I'm fishing I take it with me. That way when I find a new spot to fish I can mark it so I can go back later. I now have a smart phone and I will try the GPS apps this season. I tried to get the navionics app but had nothing but problems with it. Either way I wouldn't leave home without a GPS.

I have one but I also bought an app for my phone which is the Navionics.
You can use the GPS function to mark your spot and I believe it's accurate within a foot.  Some lakes that are included are broke down to into 3ft depth changes, Alum creek is one of them.

Do you have a Smart Phone? If so why buy a handheld GPS. Navionics offers a Mapping App. It works great and I use it all the time. If I remember right it only cost around 15 bucks.

I am going to try the Navionics for the smart phone.

I know that they have a few different applications for it and this must be the one that is better because i have heard that one of them is not that good.

Also, I purchase the best thing to carry my electronics. I purchased it at bass pro last winter.

It is a waterproof soft plastic case that locks and seals it. It has a long cord on it so you can put it over your neck. Works great.

The one thing that I do not like about the navionics app is that it does not have a lot of the lakes topo info that I fish. I wish there was a way that i could match scan paper maps on to the computer then download into the maps.

i have a lowrance h2o model(discontinued now). i really like the map it has. some of the crystals went out on the display after about 16 months & i had to send it back for repairs (cost about $120 ). before that i had the lowrance go2. it lasted a less than 2 years before it locked up. some of my friends have garmins & hae had years of problem free use. when my lowrance gives out i will probably buy a garmin.
