It's still early in the season, but figures i'd better be getting my shanty soon. Im looking for a sled style shack. I've been debating between the Frabil commando and the Clam Scout TC. My budget is $300 so any one have any opinions? Also would you take your shanty over a gas auger and why?

I think a shanty is more important.  Because you want to be able to fish in any condition when we get safe ice.  The season can be so short that if it happens at all , you can utilize a shanty no matter what.  A gas auger is nice to have, but not necessary when we get ice around 4-10".  Gas spills and runs out at times.  Gets all over your truck or car.  But sure is an investment that you will have every ice season.  A sled type shanty will haul all your gear and keep you comfortable on the ice.  Fishing comfortable might allow you to stay out longer or be confident to fish other lakes.  As far as manufacturers, Frabill makes great ones as well as Shappell in that price range. I don't know about Clam because I've never owned one. Hope this helps and post up pics when you decide!

I've had a Frabill for 5 years and love it.  Just my opinion. ;D  can't beat the sled-style shanties, they carry your gear and everything fits nice in your truck. :)

Unless you're planning a trip way up north, you'll be able to save some cash by avoiding thermal shelters. They cost quite a bit more and they're really not necessary in OH, MI, IN etc. I love my Clam Nanook. The sled is low profile and its fishable area is large. It's also very lightweight. I hope this helps.

i like my eskimo traveller for all the reasons the other guys pointed out about theirs.  light weight and fits nicely in the bed of my ranger. if i had to replace it id go with the shappell 3000 series.  bought a gas auger this yr, used  only because i have copd and if i dont have my fishing buddy with me  im not drilling too many holes
be safe, it aint no fun if you dont live to lie about it
