One Inch Of Ice

My father-in-law's pond had an inch of ice on it at day's end yesterday. The ponds in west central Ohio were completely skimmed over from Urbana to Lima when we made the drive yesterday!

What's more, Indian Lake was covered in skim ice with a huge pressure crack forming at the mouth of Russell's Point Harbor (Donut Shop.) We have a good deal of cold weather coming and the larger bodies will be given a nice dose of cold volume with the snow falling on open water the next 24 hours. This should make for an exciting start to the season in the next week!

They are calling for around 12inchs of snow around me and I think that may hurt the places that already have an inch of ice. They are also calling for 30 mph winds so hopefully that will blow the snow of the ice we already have.

I'm afraid of the same thing. What's not frozen will be fine. I'm worried that what had ice on it will be ruined. A foot of snow won't just blow away, or if it does, it'll all lay around shore and will make it tough for the edges to freeze.

I'm just thankful that its making ice.As always we need to be safe and check the ice.Like Jump always tells us , safety is king .

The skim ice over large areas on Indian Lake got blown off. The snow doesn't look to be as bad as expected!
Any reports from Alum Creek would be greatly appreciated.
I think this should be enough to get the deeper lakes ready to form up.

Here's my 2 cents regarding the amount of snow predicted.With the minimal amount of ice on the lakes, add the weight from the wet heavy snow. The ice will not be able to handle all the weight and will bow forming stress cracks around the lakes. This will let water seep up and be absorbed by the snow. It might not be the best of ice, but if this does happen, we'll be making 6-8 inches of milky ice in the next 5 days which is more than good enough to fish on...........Mark

Just drove over Milton and Meander. Open water as far as you can see. This snow can dump all over and drop that water temp. The wind gave it a nice chop also. So no worries on the snow stunting the resevoir ice, it will form just fine when the temps drop this week as they predicted.

This will chill the open water and where there is ice, the heavy snow will weigh it down and it will fill with water and freeze.
