Ice melt this week?

Hi All,

Science bit: ice melts quicker than water freezes due to ice having a higher thermal conductivity. This results in ice absorbing latent heat to change its state (from ice to water) at a quicker rate than water gives up latent heat to change its state from water to ice.

So, my question is will the highs above freezing and the lows below freezing this week result in ice melt? I'm seeing average temperatures right around 32F all week at Buckeye Lake. Since ice melts faster than it freezes this would suggest some ice melt. Another variable is how long the temperature is above freezing vs below freezing. If the temperature is above freezing for only a few hours but below freezing for most of the day then we should be ok.

From experience what does everyone usually experience? Science is one thing but with so many variables in play the actual conditions may be different.....

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.....

Andy

It probably all won't be gone but it might hurt the chances of fishing this coming weekend. Shore areas will be the first to go.
Never a bad idea to bring a 8ft. 2x6 to the lake.

It's gonna be a rough January warm up but it's not the end.

X2 Johnny. I carry a 10 foot 2x12 and pull it on the ice with me so no one steals it and leaves me stranded  ;D

I just checked various long range forecasts and February could be ok. Highs in the low 30's and lows in the teens.....promising....

Once we get thru next week Monday/Tuesday looks like we'll start building ice again. Might have a few bad days here this week and next, but long term February looks ok so far.

Well I guess on a positive note I ordered an Eskimo Wide 1 inferno yesterday. By the time it comes and I put it together we'll have had a thaw and re-freeze....

I might be the reason for the warm up.....I order gear and it warms up!

The shanty comes on Friday, hopefully we'll see ice again next week....
