night fishing

Any one make a habit of staying on the ice after the sun goes down? When I was a kid, I would see a wave of fisherman head out on Mogadore Res. at dusk as we were pulling off the ice. I was always told that they were going after crappies at night. This year I was thinking of hitting it harder after sundown. I have a Vexilar now, so it would be fun to stick it out and see what I can add to my bucket.

i have trried indian a feww times for crappies & saugeyes after dark but never had a bite. most times now i only stay for a half hour after dark & call i quits.

This a great topic.

Seems like the bite slows for me rite after dark and i head home. I know that at Alum that a lot of times the crappies move in around 10:30 at night and turn on when i am fishing the docks. I just have never tried that late on ice.

Anyone has some more experience would be great info.

When I lived in Minnesota, we hit the night bite for walleyes!! Seems that was when I caught bigger 'eyes

Don't know if that would apply to saugeyes here in OH though! Anyone try it at Indian Lake at night?

It can be super dangerous the only place I have done it is on the big lake. It has been on days where the bite was good through the day and carried into the night, super sketchy but if was worth it...

I read on another icefishing forum that red glowing PinMin work great at night. Also that glow blue produces very well for a guy when the sun dips.

When I lived in Wisc many years ago we would use glow in the dark jigs to catch eyes, crappie and northerns since moving here I havent got out ice fishing much since I could never find places to go but I am hoping this year to get my boys out and let them have fun as I did when I was a kid.

I generally tend to head back in after dusk but I may give the crappie a shot this year. Lots of talk about glow jigs taking good crappie in low light conditions.

in my exp., each lake is different. some lakes are a waste of time, others can be great after dark.

If you can get lights in the water you can extend a good Crappie bite late into the night. They still feed they just can't see your presentation- the lights also draw out the invertibre beaneath so they can stay with you all night sometimes. Find lights that float and are waterproof.

The night bite is good for me. I light up my lures with the crappi-candle and they'll stay biting until I leave. At least on Deer Creek and Berlin.
