in my opinion I think that anyone that goes out on the ice should wear a floatation suit or life vest.  Thats just one more form of protection but by no means makes you completely safe.

So sad to hear,my prayers to the family, and something to remind us all to use extreme caution when venturing onto the ice this season.

I think the year was 1995ish but on St. Marys Lake we had 10" of ice and like most people we think that would make the entire lake safe to walk on, but that's not always the case. This older man walked out on the second beach and not knowing the lake he went towards a small group of fishermen, nobody paying attention but he walkled right into an area that was open water the day before, not only did he go through but he also pull what was supposed to be his savior, now there was 2 men in the water, by luck the 1st responder was with his dad and called for help. The man lost his life that day and by luck the other guy lived. As a reminder his sled was left behind in the hole he fell through and the rest of the season that sled put reality in all our lives, no ice is safe ice and always and I stress always take a spud bar and check for youself. They also had a park ranger who died yards away from the office venturing out on the ice in the early morning the following year
