Swedish Pimple at Indian Lake?
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:10:40 PM »

Hello,

Last year was my first year ice fishing and I only fished at CJ Brown. I was after Crappie. I would love to fish Indian Lake for Saugeye but I really do not know what to use.

I keep reading about a Swedish pimple. Is that what most use there or is there a better choice for that lake. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Pimples work well,,,,,  sometimes.  From my experience, they seem to work better later in the ice year.  Some fellas swear by them.  I always have a few in my bag, but I prefer to fish Vibes on Indian.  No larger than 1/4 OZ.  3/16 do work well also and upon th right conditions, the bonus will be some slab crappies.  It seems as though the days they wont hit a vibee are the days pimples work better.....

Other jiggin baits will also work.  Jigging rapalas, pompano spoons ( saltwater bait ), and other jiggin type spoons.  Have not tried the Jigging Shad Rap yet, so no comment.

Blue / Silver,  Orange / Gold , etc.    Somedays it does not matter, others you need to have the right color.  I never fish the same color for more than 20 minutes.  With two rods pumping, you can go through the Vibee rainbow in time to see if it makes a difference on that particular day.

Excellent feed back thank you. I’m not familiar with all the different ice jig set ups so that helped big time. I’ve been using small banana shaped ice jigs to catch Crappie at CJ brown. Sounds like it’s time to pick up some different stuff. Thanks again.

Pimples are good, but the baits of choice at Indian are Jigging Rapalas and Blade baits. Lots of people are fishing these baits, so it stands to reason that a disproportionate number of fish are taken on them.
I have caught some very nice fish on Swedish Pimples, they are a little more subtle than Blades or Jigging Raps, but it's really up to you. What would you prefer? I just fish with what feels right to me most of the time. I've been told that I fish too small for eyes and too big for panfish, but I still catch plenty of both.

i usually tip my spoons & jigs with just a minnow head but sometimes it takes a whole minnow to get bit. i don't use minnows on viebes because it detracts from its action.

I use both the vib e and the pimple at the same time, I use my vex to watch the pimple go down and work the bottom, and in the other hole I use the vib e and you can feel the bait  more and really dont need to watch it working the bottom. The pimple I tip with a gulp minnow head, and red seems to work pretty good on the gulp bait.

There's allot of good information in this thread. Especially for someone new like myself. Now if the temperature would drop I could put all this information to use. Thanks again for all the replies and tips.

Welcome to Indian from one C.J. to another.  Most of what I tell you here works for crappies at C.J. and occasionally the walleyes also.  Bladebaits such as VIBE and the Pulse which should be on the market soon are excellent baits on Indian through the ice and off a boat from October thru April.  Ripping it hard and letting drop to bottom is usually the first approach and works much of the time.  Hopefully you have invested in a good Flasher or camera since you learn more from them that will help down the road.  If hard ripping or jumping the VIBE doesnt attract fish try pulling the bait up jiust fast enough to feel a small vibration then let it settle 3-6 inches from bottom.  Don't move it for a few seconds wiggle it real quick let settle again and repeat.  Sometimes they only hit on the pause, Sometimes on the drop you'll feel a tap or they'll slam it hard.  This technique also works for the Jigging shad raps and jigging raps.  So far I've had better success with the jigging shad raps over the past three years.  I tip the treble on the raps with spikes for added flavor.  I agree with earlier post that changing color often is a good thing.  Baits with chrome, green and pink, blue or firetiger are usually a good start on a selection of colors to have.  As far as pimples and other spoons they all catch fish and I love to use them with live minnows under tip-ups.  I stick to chrome here the flash brings them in and the minnow wets the appetite. Tip ups also allow you to scout a larger area to see where the fish are going.  Always put an extra hole near your tip=ups so you can get a line close to the recent one a fish comes out of.  These are schooling fish and it pays to fish close to where one has just been caught.

Hey Saugeymarc,

Thanks for all the information. There is a boat load of info here. Apparently I asked the right question at the right place because this thread is full of help.

If anyone else has two cents they want to leave...I'm still listening.
