Portage Lakes / Turkeyfoot Saturday 2/21
« on: February 21, 2015, 03:26:19 PM »
Nimxkt Tom, Dustin Lancy & Bobberbucket Dave and I joined up to try our attack Turkeyfoot today. With snow coming down and trekking more challenging by the minute, I made it out and was fishing a few minutes before 6am., first one on the lake and it was a "Currier & Ives" scene with the snow coming down.

Nixmkt Tom came from across the lake, but unfortunately had an injury while trekking across the lake. He slipped & fell... left the ice and found out he broke his right wrist. ARGHHHHHH.

Those darn ATV's & Snowmobiles have made trekking across the lake more like walking across a wash board. He later said he'll need a double splint and a plate put in his wrist. His ice fishing season is kapoot.

We tried in the xmas trees, shallow area near the peninsula point and deep water areas off the swim beach. COULDN'T FIND 'EM. The only fish caught were a 2lb Channel Cat & an lonely 11" Crappie.

Polar Plunge was taking place at the beach. Hundreds of people along with ATV's & Snowmobiles. Loud Music changed the morning solitude, but I did hear Kelly Pariso announce they had raised 104K for the event. (Parking lot was completely full). Police, Fireman, ODNR staff everywhere.

Needless to say the atmosphere was very different in comparison to my quiet solo trek before daylight on the ice.

My new Nils 6" Hand Auger worked flawlessly with the 14" ice.

Yeah, the catch was poor but the fishing was photogenic. Very sad to have Tom injured... a wonderful ice fishing buddy. Hope his recovery is a quick.

General Discussion / Ice Cleats
« on: February 16, 2015, 09:05:21 AM »
Got bored b/c of the bitter cold weather eventhough I wanted to ice fish. Got to thinking about ICE CLEATS.

Comparing various manufactured ice cleats: The cheap brands are junk with plenty of short-comings while the best brands are pricey. Decided to make a pair of Heavy Duty Ice Cleats with scrap stuff around the garage. It beats paying $65 for the top brands.

Base is made from a Rubber, Semi-Truck Mud Flap. Velcro Straps attached to 1" wide Rubber Strips. 1/2" Aluminum Heel Angle & a piece of PVC Pipe (4"Diameter) cut in half at 1/2" wide for a Heel Lock.

We'll see how they work out. I expect a few adjustments & improvements as I use them and figure out better & more simpler methods.

Nimisila / Nimmy Sunday 2/8
« on: February 08, 2015, 02:14:10 PM »
...Was extremely skeptical of doing much trekking in the slop, so I decided to scout around the lake.  The S. Main St ramp showed 3 guys (2 brothers) at the sunken bridge catching a few dink perch. I had my son's, dog (Taz) with me, a black, female, very friendly Pit Bull and gave her first jaunt on the ice. She made quick friends with everyone and seemed to be enjoying herself.

Son, Nathan called to say he was fishing off C6., so me & Taz jumped in the truck and drove over to C6. I walked out to meet him, fished for about an hour with him catching more dink perch and 1 catfish. (3lb). ,Nathan thought he had a Walleye and hollered: "GET THE GAFF".  Alas, I saw whiskers and no scales. We Called it quits at 1pm.

Observed on a couple of guys at the Campground Bay & C1., while a dozen others scattered around the lake.

Warmest day on the ice sofar this season.

Portage Lakes / LockJaw Week
« on: February 06, 2015, 05:22:57 AM »
My son, Nathan had one of his toughest weeks on the ice during this last week.  He's put in over 26+ hours on East Resevoir trying to get those elusive perch to bite.  Alas, the bite has been extremely slow and his bucket not nearly as full as he had hoped.  Sometimes, the bite has appeared non-existent. Yesterday, he fished 11am-4pm and had only 2 perch to show for his efforts.

Guess it's mid-season ice.  Hopefully the bite starts to turn for the better soon. I'll be drilling somewhere in the Portage Lakes Chain this Sunday.

Portage Lakes / East Reservoir Monday 2/2
« on: February 02, 2015, 04:42:05 PM »
Fished East with Tom today, Monday 2/2. Very tough day... fish seemed to have Lockjaw. I caught 1 keeper perch while Tom had 3.

I've had better days. I've had worse days.

Guess we're into mid-season ice fishing.

Nimisila / Nimmy 1/30 & 1/31
« on: February 01, 2015, 06:54:45 AM »
My son fished Nimmy on Friday 1/30 at C1 in the afternoon & early evening., Red Eskimo.  He brought home 15 keepers... 3 Crappie, 1 Perch & 11 Gills. One of the Crappies  was a nice 12" and the Perch was a fatty too.

Saturday 1/31 I was fishing C1 by 6am., (1st on the ice in that part of the lake). Right away, I started catching  nice, keeper Crappies & Perch. Mostly they hit on Waxworms, but managed a few on Medium Sized Minnows. Soon after daylight, my son, Nathan showed up along with Dustin, Dan & Tom.

Catch was sporadic and continued near stop after 10am.  Tom brought his Marcum Camera and we drilled a dozen holes in search of our prey. We found weedy areas, non-weedy areas & semi-weedy areas, but no luck. It seemed like the Crappie & Perch bite completely shut off after 10am. The only species we caught were gills from 10am to 2pm.

Had a nice cigar while on the ice too.

Nathan & I brought home 29 fish... Filleted 20.
Tom drew a near blank while Dan had over 30 Gills and Dustin had a dozen.

Ice was sloppy & soupy in some sections making trekking difficult. Ice as layered, but about 7".

C1 turned into a zoo near 11am.  The place was like a circus. It was the most people I've seen on the ice this season.  Luckily, I can honestly say I did not see ONE PIECE of LITTER or TRASH on the ice the area I fished.

We're having the fish today.
