Hello Dumpster and welcome!
I had to laugh when you said about telling someone about the fishing. Some people are insecure and will not help an other angler. Had that happen the other day to us. Buddy saw these guys doing much better than us. He walked over and asked what was the magic lure and the volunteered a small blue /white Vibe. OK Great. While he was standing there another hookup. Guy slowly binging the fish up almost seemingly wanting to lose it. It did not come off and low and behold a big gold spoon.
We always help other on hard water and on the rivers for steelhead. To us that gives another type of satisfaction that those kind of people have not enjoyed yet.

I do not leave it uncover anymore also. Touched the blade one time a nd it tok forever for it to stop bleeding. Not a serious cut but like a deep paper cut. Also saw a guy cut his boot from kicking the auger. Also it seems to keep the ice off of it.

Fished out of Snodgrass friday. Farther out 6/10 of a mile it was 7 inches. In closer it was at least 12. Wish I would have had a power auger.
Snow blew in to the PA side with the wind but not a problem

If you fish Erie in the soft water. Try Sheephead that way. Only the smaller white ones not the bigger brown ones. You would be surprised. I know they get a bad rap. Maybe you do not remember when they use to give away or throw out chicken wings!!

I have the FL-8 and use a Little Playmate cooler. Mounted the unit on the flip top. The 7ah battery leaves plenty of room for lure box or two and maps, Auger blades and still some room.

very basic rule......follow tracks,,,,do not make tracks. If they disappear,,,,,STOP!!!
If you are not sure be cautious so you can fish tomorrow.
My first time out I had a life jacket on inside my suit. Looked like a Blue Michelin man.
